St. Louis family law firm's research leads to a plan to help families minimize the impact of providing health insurance for minors pursuant to a Court Order or a State Order.

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) July 15, 2014

A New department within the State of Missouri has authority to review W-2s to see if parents are providing insurance through their employer pursuant to a Court Order or State Order to provide health insurance for their children. The result of this review can lead to a significant increase in the cost for health insurance coverage for the children subject to such Court Order or State Order.

After the State of Missouri established a new department to monitor whether or not individuals are complying with Court orders or State orders to provide health insurance for their children, the Zolman Law Firm, a family law firm based out of St. Louis, MO, went to the books. This new Missouri department reviews individual W-2 forms to ascertain whether or not parents have insurance coverage through their employers. If no evidence of insurance is found, the State of Missouri sends a letter to the employer ordering them to place the children of the employee under their insurance plan, even if doing so would also require the employer to add the employee to the insurance plan as well; all of this at the expense of the employee.

Zolman Law Firm finds it to be especially problematic that even if parents provide proof of private insurance covering their dependents, thus meeting the terms of their order, the state can still force them into an employer-sponsored plan if they believe that to be beneficial to the child. Upon receiving proof of a private plan, the State of Missouri reviews the details and decides which type of insurance is best for the children, with relatively little emphasis on the cost to the parent. Realizing that this could lead to parents having to pay many hundreds of dollars in extra costs each month, the Zolman Law Firm wanted to find a way to help parents without that kind of extra money to weather the storm.

Carla J. Zolman, Attorney at Law with the Zolman Law Firm, believes that this procedure could have a detrimental effect on Missouri's families. "Since most people don't have several hundred extra dollars per month, this could cause someone to lose their home," she argues.

Any parent ordered to provide health insurance for their child is subject to this review and the resultant increase in support obligation, which is why Zolman Law Firm placed so much focus on learning the ins-and-outs of the rules that apply. Through the firm's research, Zolman is confident that Zolman Law Firm can help. "While this is a potentially devastating financial hit," Zolman says, "There are certain rules in the fine print whereby we may be able to alter the situation and minimize the financial impact on the individual."
