WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials say a government computer system that interacts with HealthCare.gov was hacked earlier this month, compromising the sensitive personal data of some 75,000 people. The breached system was shut down and technicians are working to restore it before sign-up season starts Nov. 1. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services made the announcement late Friday afternoon, a time slot agencies often use to release unfavorable developments. Officials said the hacked system is used by insurance agents and brokers to directly enroll customers for subsidized health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. All other sign-up systems are working. Law enforcement has been alerted, and affected customers will be notified. Reported by SFGate 5 hours ago.

Manhattan Mental Health Counseling Discusses the Link Between Social Media and Mental Illness

Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, a psychotherapy private practice in NYC that accepts insurance, has issued a warning about the potential health risks of using - and overusing - social media. There already exists a comprehensive body of research speaking to the impact social networks may have on one’s mental and emotional well-being, explains Natalie Buchwald, Founder of Manhattan Mental Health Counseling.

NEW YORK (PRWEB) October 22, 2018

Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, a psychotherapy private practice in NYC that accepts insurance, has issued a warning about the potential health risks of using - and overusing - social media. There already exists a comprehensive body of research speaking to the impact social networks may have on one’s mental and emotional well-being, explains Natalie Buchwald, Founder of Manhattan Mental Health Counseling.

A 2014 experiment by California State University, for example, linked Facebook addiction to the same part of the brain associated with gambling and substance abuse. A study carried out over several years by professors Holly Shakya and Nicholas Christakis found a direct link between increased Facebook activity and decreased mental health. A 2017 survey by the Royal Society for Public Health found that most social networks appear to have a negative effect on the mental well-being of people aged 14-24.

Further, alongside smartphones and dating sites, social media has been linked on numerous other occasions to an upturn in major depression across multiple demographics.

“I want to make it clear that I am not demonizing social media,” explains Natalie Buchwald. “On the contrary, I think it’s a wonderful tool when used in moderation. It’s an excellent means of self-expression, an outlet for new modes of creativity, and a great way to network. That said, our society has never seen anything like it - which is precisely why we need to tread carefully.”

At this point, it is not clear whether social media causes conditions such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia, or simply exacerbates them. There can be no doubt that there is a link, notes Natalie. It’s the extent of that link that requires further research.

“In addition to feeling somewhat impersonal, social media can expose us to a range of negative thoughts and emotions,” says Natalie. “It can expose our insecurities, sap our attention, and lead to bouts of obsessive, anxious behavior. Anyone who is already prone to depression or any other form of mental illness could very well find their conditions worsened by extensive use.”

Natalie continues that the widespread lack of affordable mental health counseling creates even further problems. That is part of the reason she created Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, which allows New Yorkers to work with a dedicated psychotherapist and pay using their health insurance.

Natalie intends to do whatever she can to help New Yorkers achieve better overall mental health - whether their illness stems from an obsession over likes or something else altogether.

· *Kushner and Kloss have been together for six years but have mostly attempted to keep their relationship private. *
· *Here's what we know about the couple's relationship — as well as their unconventional relationship with the White House. *

Joshua Kushner, the younger brother of the White House adviser Jared Kushner, is officially married to model Karlie Kloss.

The duo wed in a ceremony in Upstate New York last week. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump were among the guests at the wedding.

The pair was engaged in July.

Kloss and Kushner also made headlines earlier this year when they posted photos from the March for Our Lives, the anti-gun-violence rally in support of stricter gun-control measures that took place in many US cities and towns in March. Kushner and Kloss had previously remained quiet on politics, including about their connections to the Trump family. And while the duo dated for more than six years, they rarely speak publicly about their relationship.

In light of the well-connected couple's marriage, here's a look at the life of Joshua Kushner and Karlie Kloss:

Two years later, he raised $40 million from investors including Princeton University and Peter Thiel, a venture capitalist known for his investments in tech companies such as Facebook and his support of Trump in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Thrive was an early investor in Instagram, as well as in startups including Warby Parker, Kickstarter, and ClassPass.-Kushner helped found Oscar Health in 2012.-

Kloss skyrocketed to prominence in 2007, when she was 15.

By 2010, she was a big enough name to appear on "Gossip Girl" as herself. (Ironically, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner also appeared on the show in 2010, though in a different episode.)

The model has often made headlines because of her close friendship with Taylor Swift. In 2015, Kloss started Kode With Klossy, a charity that encourages girls to get involved in coding and tech.

Trump administration unveils health options for small firms

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is rolling out new options for small employers to use tax-free accounts for providing health coverage to workers, officials said Monday. The idea is to expand so-called "health reimbursement arrangements" to allow employees to buy their own individual health insurance policies. Employers could also pair the accounts with workplace health plans, allowing workers to use the money for additional benefits such as dental care. Officials from the departments of Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services provided a broad overview of the proposed regulations Monday evening ahead of an official announcement, expected Tuesday. Critics say the approach will undermine traditional job-based coverage. Reported by SeattlePI.com 5 hours ago.

Robert Reich: Democrats, Don’t Go High Or Low, Go Big And Bold – OpEd

$

Donald Trump says the midterm elections are a “referendum about me.” Of course they are. Everything is about him.

Anyone who still believes the political divide runs between Republicans and Democrats hasn’t been paying attention. There’s no longer a Republican Party. The GOP is now just pro-Trump.

Meanwhile Trump is doing all he can to make the Democratic Party the anti-Trump Party. “Democrats,” he declares, are “too dangerous to govern.” They’re “an angry left-wing mob,”leading an “assault on our country.” **

Never before has a president of the United States been so determined not to be president of all Americans. He’s president of his supporters.

Tyrants create cults of personality. Trump is beyond that. He equates America with himself, and disloyalty to him with insufficient patriotism. In his mind, a giant “Trump” sign hangs over the nation. “We” are his supporters, acolytes, and toadies. “They” are the rest of us.

When everything and everyone is either pro- or anti-Trump, there’s no room for neutral expertise, professional norms, good public policy, or the rule of law.

Trump is reportedly on the brink of firing Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, whom Trump suspects “might be a Democrat.” Mattis’s real sin has been to believe the military should be neutral and professional. To Trump that smacks of disloyalty.

Trump calls military generals “my” generals. He expects the FBI director, the Attorney General, and the Justice Department to be “his.” He proudly points to “his” judges and justices.

Republican members of Congress are part of “his” government – unless, like Jeff Flake and the late John McCain, they’re not.

He believes the nation’s press is either for him or against him. Fox News is indubitably for him – now a virtual propaganda arm of the White House. The rest are against him even when they merely report the news.

We’re all being taken in by this Trumpian dichotomy – even those of us in the anti-Trump camp.

When Trump is the defining issue in America, he gets to set the national agenda. All major debate in this country revolves around him, his goals, and the objects of his vilification.

The Trumpification of America hardly ends if Democrats take over the House or possibly the Senate. Trump will blame them for everything that goes wrong. He’ll make up problems they’re supposedly responsible for. He’ll ridicule them and call them traitors.

He’ll do the same to anyone who shows serious interest in running for president against him in 2020.

Naturally, Democrats will want to defend themselves. Naturally, they’ll also want to attack Trump.

If they flip the House they’ll use their subpoena power to dredge up whatever dirt on him they can find – summoning his tax records, Robert Mueller, Mueller’s investigative findings – and perhaps even beginning impeachment proceedings.

Trump and his Republican enablers will fight back, condemning Democrats for weakening America, engaging in fishing expeditions and witch hunts. Trump and his lawyers will tie up the subpoenas in court, claiming executive privilege.

Aspiring Democratic candidates for president will join in the brawl.

Op-ed writers, editorial boards, and pundits will argue over the best ways for Democrats to proceed against Trump – going low or going high. Pollsters will tell us which Democratic candidate is seen as being most effective against him.

But all of this is a giant trap. It accepts and enforces Trump’s worldview – that nothing is more important than Donald Trump, that he embodies all that’s good (or bad) about America, and that our most significant choice is to be for him or against him.

It allows Trump to continue to dominate the news and occupy the center of the nation’s attention.

We’d talk about nothing else for two years. We won’t be discussing how to restore wage growth, get health insurance to all Americans, reverse climate change, or get big money out of politics.

We won’t be envisioning how a new America can widen opportunity, expand voting rights, end racism, reduce poverty, and work constructively with the rest of the world.

We won’t be aspiring to be more than we were before Trump. We’ll debate and dissect the damage done since Trump.

Of course Democrats have to fight him. But they also have to lift America beyond him.

The central question shouldn’t be whether we’re pro- or anti-Trump, or whether we go low or high in fighting him.

The question is where America should go – and what we, together, can become. Reported by Eurasia Review 18 minutes ago.

FlexJobs also highlights top 30 companies hiring the most work-from-anywhere jobs in 2018

BOULDER, Colo. (PRWEB) October 23, 2018

Today FlexJobs released new insights from its Sept/Oct 2018 survey, which gathered responses from over 500 digital nomads about key topics related to their digital nomad career, lifestyle and workstyle. Based on this survey, the profile of the average digital nomad is a married female Gen Xer who is an experienced employee working at a company at least 40 hours a week in the writing, education and training, or administrative career fields. She has health insurance, is saving for retirement, and has a bachelor's degree or higher.

“There are a number of misconceptions about digital nomads, such as that only young millennials going through a phase are interested in the lifestyle, that they’re freelancers that don’t earn a decent living, or they can’t grow a great career while traveling, none of which is validated by this data,” said Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs. “Practicing nomads can be found across demographics and career fields, and they’re hard-working professionals who for a variety of reasons like work-life balance, poor local job market, or a passion for travel, are committed to earning a living in a nonconventional way,” Sutton concluded.

Interesting highlights include: Visit https://www.flexjobs.com/blog/post/flexjobs-digital-nomad-survey-insights-remote-lifestyle/ for the full report.· Only 27% of respondents identified as Gen Z or millennials, with 41% identifying as Gen Xers, and 32% as baby boomers or the silent generation.
· 61% of digital nomads are married and 39% are unmarried. 26% of digital nomads have children 18 and under.
· More digital nomads are employed by a company (35%) versus being freelancers (28%) or business owners (18%).
· 38% say they feel less stressed financially as a digital nomad and 34% say there is no difference in financial stress than when they worked a traditional job.
· Nearly one fifth (18%) report making six figures or more and 22% make between $50,000 and $99,999. The average U.S. worker today earns roughly $46,641 a year.
· 74% of digital nomads have health insurance and 55% are saving for retirement.
· The majority work from their hotel/hostel (46%), coffee shop or local dining establishment (45%). Less than one-fifth work in co-working spaces (19%).
· 31% of married digital nomads have spouses who travel with them full-time, 38% travel with them part-time, and 32% don’t travel with their digital nomad partner at all
· Only 6% have participated in travel programs for nomads, such as Remote Year or Hacker Paradise. Just 5% have used co-living spaces, such as Outsite or Nomad House

To help digital nomads and other job seekers interested in finding remote jobs that allow candidates to be based from anywhere in the world, FlexJobs has also compiled the Top 30 Companies Currently Hiring for Work-from-Anywhere Remote Jobs. This list is based on an analysis of remote job listings from over 50,000 companies in the FlexJobs database between Jan. 1, 2018 - Aug. 31, 2018. The companies on this list had the most job listings that met the following criteria:

· A “Work-from-Anywhere” remote job without location restrictions
· Fully remote jobs that don’t require any time in the office
· Offer either full-time or part-time schedules

Mental health counselor, full stack developer, sales operation specialist, and marketing designer are examples of work-from-anywhere jobs currently hiring.

And for a first-hand view of the digital nomad lifestyle, FlexJobs has partnered with Jason Byer who is currently traveling the U.S. with his family while maintaining his full-time job with crowdSPRING. With weekly videos and monthly blog posts, Jason provides a first-hand look at his digital nomad adventures, discussing various topics such as how to talk to your boss about becoming a nomad, how he structures his day, works from new locations, and finds time to explore.

More Californians Selecting Alternative Health Coverage Options During 2019 Open Enrollment

Religious health sharing co-ops and direct primary care practices, such as OC’s Elevated Health, are becoming popular money-saving alternatives to traditional health insurance.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (PRWEB) October 24, 2018

October 15 marked the beginning of open enrollment for health insurance in California and many Orange County residents are scrambling to find alternative plans as Covered California rates continue to increase. In 2019, Covered California pricing is expected to rise an average of 9%, while some plans may soar as much as 32%. As rates fluctuate, alternative insurance options such as direct primary care or religious sharing groups, which often offer better pricing and coverage than traditional insurance, are becoming more of a mainstream and functional choice for many individuals.

Californians are now free to source alternative insurance options, independent of costly employer or private plans, now that the “individual mandate” is cancelled and penalties will not be applied for going without traditional coverage. Religious sharing group co-operatives have become more widespread thanks to their lower out-of-pocket expenses for individuals and families. However, because it is not regulated like traditional insurance, coverage for certain procedures and pre-existing conditions can be denied.

Alternatively, many people are discovering the benefits of belonging to a direct primary care (DPC) practice which works as a membership to a private medical practice where patients pay a monthly fee based on age. With DPC, patients have access to their own doctor around the clock through in-person appointments, phone calls, texts, emails, and video chat. Many DPC offices provide additional in-house services that can prevent unnecessary hospital trips and reduce healthcare spending while improving overall care.

Huntington Beach resident, Britt H, skipped a costly ER trip by directly reaching Dr. Matt Abinante, owner of Elevated Health, when her son’s ear began to bleed late in the evening. Dr. Abinante was able to diagnose the problem over the phone and call in medications to a local pharmacy, saving countless hours in the ER waiting room and thousands of dollars for the visit.

Elevated Health is the largest, fastest growing direct primary care practice in Southern California. They offer more doctors per patient and a host of patient benefits such as unlimited visits, wholesale lab pricing, various in-office procedures, and wholesale medication. “Our goal is to keep you as healthy as possible, while saving you time and money. We remove the barriers of traditional insurance and provide you with a modern take on the personal, old-fashioned care missing in today’s healthcare industry,” explains Dr. Matthew Abinante.

Visit Elevated Health online, or contact them at 714-916-5210 to sign up or learn more about pricing and services available for their direct primary care members. Reported by PRWeb 16 hours ago.

Breast Reconstruction Procedures for Cancer Survivors Underscore the Therapeutic Uses of Plastic Surgery, says Dr. J Plastic Surgery

The Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon comments on a recent article that, far from trying to look like models or movie stars, people who get reconstructive and other procedures simply want to look and feel like themselves.

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) October 24, 2018

An October 18 article at WFLX.com looks at the reasons many doctors recommend reconstructive plastic surgery for breast cancer patients who have received full or partial mastectomies. The article includes the case of Jennifer Griffin, a three time cancer survivor who received reconstructive surgery because of wanting to continue to feel confident and feminine. The article also points out that health insurance is legally mandated to cover reconstructive procedures when it provides for breast cancer surgeries. Beverly Hills based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., better known to his patients as Dr. J, says that reconstructive surgery for breast cancer survivors is an outstanding example of the fact that, while many plastic surgeries are about often already very attractive people who want to look their absolute best and gain more positive attention for personal and/or career purposes, a very large number of plastic surgery patients are simply trying to feel better, avoid the wrong kind of attention, and look more like themselves.

Dr. J notes that, somewhat like breast reconstructions, in some cases a rhinoplasty (nose job) that follows trauma such as an accident may be covered by insurance, even as it might help someone avoid the kind of disfigurement that can result from a badly broken nose. Though they are only sometimes covered by insurance, breast reduction procedures are another common example of plastic surgery used therapeutically in multiple ways, says the doctor. In a great many cases, patients may have multiple reasons to want a procedure. Breast reduction is often recommended by family doctors because very large breasts can cause back pain. At the same time, many women may choose to get it so they can participate in certain sports. Finally, especially for younger patients, many also appreciate the fact that the procedure can help them to avoid too much unwanted attention, Dr. J adds.

Other procedures that, while regarded by medical insurance as strictly cosmetic, can help to avoid a great deal of emotional pain. Dr. J says that such procedures include ear pinning for youngsters who may be concerned about bullying over “bat ears.” Another example, he adds, might be male breast reduction to treat gynecomastia (oversize male breasts) to deal with a condition those younger men especially can find deeply embarrassing.

Dr. J concludes by saying that no one should be ashamed of considering plastic surgery for any reason, including wanting to simply feel like themselves. Dr. J’s qualifications as a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon can be seen online. Interested readers may also call his office at (310) 228-3151. Reported by PRWeb 12 hours ago.
