This week, President Obama discussed Open Enrollment on the Health Insurance Marketplace, which began November 1 and will end on January 31. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, 20 million American adults have obtained health insurance, and an additional three million children have gained coverage since the President took office. The uninsured rate is the lowest level on record.

Today, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, your preventive care is free; there are no more annual or lifetime limits on essential health care; you can’t get charged more just for being a woman; young people can stay on a parent’s plan until they turn 26; seniors get discounts on their prescriptions; and no one can be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. To sign up for health care coverage, visit HealthCare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596.

Don't shift on assisted suicide, Catholics urge US medical group

Washington D.C., Nov 5, 2016 / 04:48 am (CNA/EWTN News).- For years, the American Medical Association has held a strong stance against measures promoting physician-assisted suicide. But that could change.

Recently, the American Medical Association announced that it is reconsidering its position, prompting groups such as the Society of Catholic Social Scientists to speak out, urging that they maintain a firm “no” to “intentionally induced deaths.”

“Our organization strongly urges you not to change your policy,” stated an Oct. 31 letter from Society of Catholic Social Scientists president, Dr. Stephen M. Krason.

“Your organization has enormous influence in the shaping of public policy concerning healthcare and medical issues and a change in your position would almost certainly give momentum to the effort to legalize physician-assisted suicide in the U.S.”

Over the past few years, a handful of states have legalized physician-assisted suicide. The state of Colorado will vote on the measure this November.

The assisted suicide movement gained traction with the controversial case of Brittany Maynard, a brain cancer patient who relocated to Oregon in 2014 to pursue physician-assisted suicide.

Since its popularization, stories have surfaced about health-insurance companies *denying medical treatment to the terminally ill*, but instead insuring lethal pills that would end the patient’s life.

The Society of Catholic Social Scientists is among many groups advocating against physician-assisted suicide. Opponents also include *disability rights advocates*, who have called the measure “ignorant,” and Catholic leaders including *Pope Francis*, who said that assisted suicide is “false compassion.”

Among the many dangers listed by the Society of Catholic Social Scientists is the fine line of transforming “a healing profession into a killing profession,” and driving “a wedge between physicians and their patients, causing people to deeply distrust their physicians who they will not be sure will be faithful to an ethic to help them when they are seriously ill.”

The letter also mentioned that terminally ill patients will be viewed as expendable if assisted suicide becomes acceptable, and that the basic dignity of the human person will be undermined, which in turn will undermine end-of-life palliative care and depression treatment for the terminally ill.

Krason also said that acceptance of the “right to die” will undoubtedly break the boundaries of just the terminally ill, eventually spreading to other groups of individuals.

“It inevitably will spread to more and more categories of people, including those who aren’t even seriously ill and children with serious illnesses and birth defects, as the European experience is making clear,” Krason wrote.

“Instead of pediatric and neonatal specialists working to save handicapped newborns, they will be increasingly looked to for the purpose of ending their lives.”

Krason also said that the “right-to-die” will quickly turn into the “duty-to-die,” placing unneeded pressure on the elderly and sick to not be a burden on their families.

“Indeed, there is evidence that the elderly are becoming increasingly fearful that medical authorities might think of them as undeserving of care, even if they wish to have it, so they should just be allowed die,” Krason wrote, pointing to the example of *the elderly woman* who tattooed “don’t euthanize me” on her arm.

The letter also highlighted the “multitude of legal issues will result from it that will cause potentially serious problems for the medical profession.”

Krason urged the American Medical Association to consider these costly implications of the “right to die,” saying that it will only lead to “a further erosion of respect for innocent human life.”

“As social scientists, we are very well aware of where societal trends are going and the likely consequences of them, and allowing physician-assisted suicide will have calamitous effects for vulnerable populations, for the medical and healing professions generally, and for American life and society in general,” Krason wrote.

“We strongly urge your organization to continue its official opposition to physician-assisted suicide.” Reported by CNA 21 hours ago.

I'm An Iraq War Veteran And Proudly Support Hillary Clinton

Eleven years ago this August I was deployed in Iraq with the Lima Company combat unit, and recently, I reunited with my fellow Marines to commemorate the anniversary. Looking around, I was taken by how many of them are still serving -- in the military, as police offers, or helping others as doctors and lawyers. I shouldn't be surprised. Service to our country is an honor and one we carry for the rest of our lives.I served alongside Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Muslim Americans, and whites. But on the battlefield, that didn't matter. We weren't concerned about about our race or religion because we knew we were stronger together.I never imagined we could have a presidential candidate who so blatantly insults our military, servicemen and veterans. But Donald Trump's transgressions are vast, and his relentless attempts to disparage a Gold Star family is one of the most disgraceful.Trump thought Senator John McCain wasn't a war hero because he was captured. He also juxtaposed the experiences of Vietnam War veterans with his sex life. He claims to know more about ISIS than our generals, who he says have been "reduced to rubble." And he praises dictators and insults our allies. So, in the four days we have left in this election--we must set down a marker for what's acceptable behavior, especially from our president, our next Commander-in-Chief.There's only one candidate who will mark the service of our troops, respect our sacrifice when we come home, and honor the families of those who serve and those servicemen who have fallen. That's why I support Hillary Clinton.Hillary fought for the post-9/11 GI Bill to make sure veterans could go to college and sat on the Committee on Armed Services during her time in the Senate. She helped extend health insurance to America's reservists to make sure anyone who volunteers to serve their country is taken care of. And she has plans to support our troops and our veterans as president.Trump is too hateful and divisive to be our next president and Commander-in-Chief. Find your voting location here so you can join your family and friends and vote on Election Day (this Tuesday, November 8) in what will be the most important election of our generation.Vote to honor the best friends of those who have served in the military. Vote so their sacrifice is not forgotten. Vote for the future of our country, because together we can and we will defeat Donald Trump. Vote for Hillary Clinton who will honor and serve the veterans.

An Open Letter To Trump Voters From A Mom

$

I go to sleep every night filled with anxiety. We all know this is not an ordinary election -- but for me and my family, it's downright terrifying. Making America Great Again is something I desperately do not want, because to us it means going back to a time when our marriage was not legal, and our kids could be taken away from us because we are gay. I get that everyone is a bit scared this election season -- but really think about it... is your family structure in danger?

Because it's not. The economy may be better or worse, health care options could be a mess, but at the end of the day, no one will question your marriage or your kids. For us, that is a very real possibility. A vote for Trump/Pence brings us one step closer to their vision, one which does not include equal rights for my family, or families like mine.

Let me back it up a little.

A little over a year ago, my marriage to my wife Kendra was not recognized throughout the country. Even now, my relationship with my three kids (Addison, Evan, and Kate) is not always recognized outside of our state of Massachusetts. When we travel to South Carolina to visit Kendra's family, I carry the extra burden of knowing that if something were to happen to Kendra, Evan and Kate would be taken by social services because I haven't gotten around to adopting them yet.

(Yes, I have to adopt my own kids. I guess I should be grateful that it's cheaper than a typical adoption -- only $1500 per kid -- but it's still a financial burden. Try to imagine that -- adopting your own kids.)

Two years ago, when Evan was facing open-heart surgery, a nurse practitioner called me for a pre-op survey. After realizing I was not Evan's biological mom, he went on a tirade about how it wasn't fair that I was allowed to answer medical questions for him when step-parents aren't allowed to answer for their step-kids. He might as well have just said outright that I wasn't Evan's "real" mom.

Three years ago we celebrated when DOMA was struck down, and we no longer had to pay taxes on our health insurance (it was considered income for Kendra to be on my family plan); we could now collect each other's social security and not have to pay inheritance tax in the unfortunate event that one of us passed. We even filed our first joint tax return!

Almost ten years ago, Kendra and I got "married" in South Carolina. It was awesome, but totally not legal. We picked the venue not because it was beautiful, but because it was the ONLY place in the area that would allow a same-sex wedding. Here are a few more tidbits that helped put a damper on what should have been the happiest day of our lives...

Only two local photographers would agree to take our wedding photos. Many others told us we were an abomination to God, and refused to provide their services.

The bus driver who transported our guests from the hotel to the backyard BBQ the night before the wedding cornered Kendra in an isolated part of her parent's five-acre garden and demanded to know where the groom was. He continued to harass her until luckily someone else came by and she was able to make an escape.

On the afternoon of our wedding, the limo driver, upon realizing we were marrying each other, refused make eye contact or open doors for any of us.

The happiest day of my life was tainted by the outright, COMPLETELY LEGAL, prejudice of others.

Twelve years ago, Kendra and I went to the doctor together. I had a hearing test. Quite frankly, all I wanted was to get the hearing test over with so I could go home. I was tired and had a lot to get done. Instead, I had to listen to a ten-minute diatribe about gay marriage and how it would never fly in this country. I had to listen to a rant about how if we'd just call it something other than marriage (he suggested "Purple Fuzzy thing," which I don't think does the whole lifetime commitment thing justice), no politician could deny us our rights. At this point, I was ready to cry.

Meanwhile, the Kendra was having a difficult time with the receptionist. When she handed the unfriendly woman our insurance card (which had my name on it, as I was the primary insured), the woman didn't quite know what to do with herself, or the card for that matter.

"Wait, don't you have a card with your own name on it?"
"No, I am covered under my wife's insurance. That's her name on the card."

At first, Kendra just thought that perhaps the receptionist wasn't too bright. Unfortunately, that idea was squashed when another woman walked up to the counter and told the receptionist that she was on her husband's insurance plan and asked if they needed to see the card.

"Oh no, you're all set. We already have a copy of the card from him -- it's the same information on each card."

Funny how she perked up for the straight lady... and didn't seem so confounded by the insurance card issue.

These are just SOME of the things we've faced. Never mind the number of people who've asked us who the "real mom" is, or people who insisted to Addison that she cannot possibly have two moms. So I am pleading with you, before you cast your ballot, think about how your decision could affect families like mine.
· Both Trump and Pence are against gay marriage, and plan to appoint judges to the Supreme Court to overturn marriage equality.
· Trump supports the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA), which would allow federal government employees to discriminate against LGBTQ people.
· As Indiana governor, Pence signed a bill to allow businesses to discriminate and deny service to LGBTQ patrons.

Fly to Australia to Save on Health Care: A PET Scan's Cost is Four Times More in the U.S. than in Oz

There are five more days of this exhausting event we call the American Presidential campaign. To my Aussie readers I want to put in perspective the most recent "revelations" about Hillary's emails. It's not going to make much of a difference. To the committed on either side, they have already made up their minds (and like me, many have already voted with absentee ballots). Perhaps in certain swing states like Ohio and Florida some disgruntled voters, liking neither candidate but Trump even less than Hillary, might decide just to pass on voting for either because of this ill-timed announcement by the head of the FBI (a Republican, though nominated for the post by Obama). But the polls show only a three point lead for Hillary at this time which is scary. But I suspect her electoral college vote advantage will be much more substantial. Still in the Blue state of California we all remain a bit worried.

Meanwhile while I have your attention I thought I'd share another example of the differences between the health care systems of the U.S. and Australia. I've written extensively on Aussie attitudes towards using psychiatric drugs with children compared to the U.S. But as many of you know I've also commented on their health care as an American patient who happened to undergo a radical prostatectomy in Melbourne in September 2015.

The surgery eliminated all but approximately three prostate cells (I'm guessing on this exact number but will shortly let you know basis of my estimate) from my pelvis. But before I had the surgery I had a state of the art scan, called a Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen Positron Emission Tomography necessarily abbreviated as a PSMA PET scan to rule out any metastasis which would have obviated the surgery. This scan is considered more sensitive than the usual presurgical full body MRI and bone scans to rule out metastasis. The PSMA PET scan is offered at only five sites in the world, including as it happened in Melbourne and now in San Francisco. Can you tell where this story is heading yet?

The scan is considered quasi-experimental in both countries. My urologist in Melbourne was very enthusiastic about this scan's advantages over the traditional scans and urged me to get it even though it was not covered by Australian Medicare. He forgot that since I only had a year-long visa I was not covered by Australian Medicare. I paid for all the treatments (including the three night in-patient surgical admission and before the surgery, an unplanned visit to the emergency room and overnight stay after the biopsy) with a credit card to be reimbursed by my private American health insurance company, United Health Care (UHC), the largest private insurer in America.

So I got the scan relatively quickly. It was performed at the Alfred Hospital only blocks from my apartment in South Yarra. Aussies, who know the Alfred, know certain parts of the hospital are quite old (it's the oldest continuously operating health facility in Melbourne but has many modern buildings).

So I walked over to the Alfred from my apartment. I would guess the section that houses the PET scanner hadn't been redecorated since the 1970s. I met one receptionist. She gave me a one-page form requiring one signature that told me the test was experimental and what my cost would be. A nurse then placed a simple i.v. on my left arm. The neuroradiologist came in and injected me with the radionucleotide. I then spent about 50 minutes in the machine getting scanned. The test cost $800AUD which translated, given the exchange rate, to about $600US. UHC reimbursed me at 80% so my final cost for the exam, which mercifully showed no mets, was $150US.

A year later, now back in San Francisco, those three cells were putting out a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) of 0.33. Given I had already had the surgery, my Australian urologist thought I should get another PSMA PET scan to potentially localize those three remaining cells more specifically in case radiation was added to my treatment (the effectiveness might be increased, while side effects diminished with a more precise location). My American urologist agreed and I was scheduled for a repeat PSMA PET scan at UCSF (the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center) which has multiple campuses in San Francisco. That's when the fun started.

Two days before the test was scheduled (I had cancelled patients for that morning) I received call from "Gloria," a UCSF insurance authorizations coordinator. She said UHC hadn't approved my repeat scan yet. The insurance company was waiting for a peer-to-peer doctors' review of the indications for the scan before approving it. Urology hadn't responded and Radiology was waiting.

Gloria said if I preferred to go ahead without the authorization I could self-pay for the procedure. I naturally asked her "How much?" In essence, she said "For you a special deal..." - she specifically told me that the cost for the scan was $11,000US but if I was self-paying UCSF would offer me the scan at a bargain rate of $5000US. I told Gloria I paid $800AUD for exactly the same scan in Melbourne and the $5000US was way too much for me out of my pocket. I preferred to wait for the insurance approval to come through.

It did the next day. Gloria told me that the "negotiated rate" between UCSF and UHC was $3000US for the scan. I quickly did my 80/20 calculation and concluded my portion of the cost of the scan would be $600US - four times more than I had paid in Melbourne - but given the difference between the two health systems, understandable and worth it to me.

I might mention that the UCSF PET scanner was at the India Basin campus of UCSF, a state of the art modern building right next to AT&T Baseball Park, the home of the San Francisco Giants. At least six persons were involved in getting me ready for the scan, not including the neuroradiologist whom I never met. I was given three forms totaling thirteen pages and three signatures before my i.v. was started. The test took only 45 minutes at UCSF (and they did additionally inject me with a dye to highlight my blood vessels which the Australian doctors didn't think was necessary).

I checked in with my Australian urologist and asked him if the government was funding any part of the PSMA PET scan. He told me to the best of his knowledge, "no." Later I asked Gloria why she thought the charges for the same exact test were so much more at UCSF. She candidly said, "Doctor Diller, we are the only center west of the Mississippi offering this more sensitive test for prostate cancer metastasis. Clearly we think we can get this price (and likely have wealthy men pay for it out of pocket - she didn't say that - I'm adding it) which is why we are charging this price. We pay a negotiated rate with the insurance companies who refuse to pay the $11,000."

Oh, I nearly forgot. The scan was completely negative - meaning it didn't even show the remaining prostate tissue I had left in my pelvis responsible for the 0.33 PSA. Gratefully there was also no evidence of any new extra-pelvic signs of prostate cancer. I was again relieved but a bit disappointed that the best test was still not sensitive enough to pick up what I've decided are three nasty prostate cells left in my body.

So there you have it: an amazing contrast of the two systems. One is for patients' health, the other is for providers' profit. In mild defense of the charging what you can get, UCSF, provides, at a significant loss, services to the indigent or those lacking insurance. MediCal (government insurance for those below a certain poverty line) only pays a fraction of the real costs to doctors and institutions accepting these patients. By charging higher fees for services and procedures that will be paid by Medicare (the US version for those over 65, pays relatively decently), private insurers or self-paying wealthy patients, UCSF can better stay financially afloat.

Still even with Obama Care, U.S. health care costs continue to escalate. Some large private health insurers (like UHC and Aetna) are opting out of certain insurance markets (mostly in Red States where local support for the limited national health insurance has been weak). Still a reckoning is due with burgeoning medical costs. In the first round, attacking the power structure of medical care in the U.S., the government (read Democrats) isolated the insurance industry from their usual allies, doctors/hospitals and big Pharma (the drug companies). Indeed, the latter two made off like bandits in the Affordable Care Act.

I predict the next round of reform will go after big Pharma requiring them to do what they already do with the Veteran's Administration in negotiating and reducing the prices of their most common medications. Once those prices are brought into line the government will finally challenge the doctors/hospitals' charges hopefully reducing payments to specialists while increasing reimbursements to gate-keeper primary care doctors (does this remind the Aussie readers of their GPs' roles?). Overall though, Americans will have to be reeducated on their expectations about what modern medicine can do for them. Less money must be spent devoted to end of life care and more towards preventing the self-injury of certain life styles -- in order for costs to go down.

Or they can just spend a year in Oz and learn how an imperfect but much more functional healthcare systems operates.

Wish us luck on November 8th.

Preppers Stockpile Survival Food On Fears Of Post-Election Chaos

Preppers Stockpile Survival Food On Fears Of Post-Election Chaos *The 2016 election year is bringing out the worst among some elements of society. *From vandalism to physical assaults to large scale race riots to terrorist bombings and mall stabbings, STHFPlan's Stefan Gleason notes that *social disorder has become a more prominent feature of life in a polarized America*.

It’s easy (and politically convenient) for the establishment media to blame Donald Trump for inflaming the political divide.* In reality, Trump supporters have far more often been the victims rather than the instigators of political violence.*

*Moreover, the forces driving social unrest have been building for years. *Surveys show that large numbers of Americans – including Republicans and Democrats, blacks and whites – agree that* race relations have worsened under President Obama’s watch. *The nation’s first half-African president has repeatedly sided with racial agitators and refused to denounce antipolice riots. His attorney general, Loretta Lynch, has given legal legitimacy to vicious racial narratives that have little to no basis in fact.

In addition to leaving the country with fresh new racial wounds, the outgoing Obama administration will leave America with a doubling of the national debt to nearly $20 trillion, a historically low rate of workforce participation, 20 million more people on food stamps, and a shrinking middle class whose earnings aren’t keeping up with surging costs of things like health insurance.

*People are frustrated, restless, angry.* And officially, we aren’t even in a recession yet. Officially, the inflation rate remains below 2%.

*What happens when the economy and stock market start tanking? Or when costs for fuel, food, and other consumer goods start taking off again?*

Well, it appears the answer - as so many have already realized - is finally being recognized by the mainstream media as NBC News reports, *preppers are running up sales of emergency survival food due to election night doomsday concerns...*

While sales for "long term food" typically see an increase around natural disasters and elections, *"this is more intense than what we saw in 2012,"* said Keith Bansemer, VP of marketing for My Patriot Supply, a manufacturer and seller of survival food. *During the previous election his company saw sales double. This time it's triple.*

*"We have everyone we can on the phones," he said. "We are overwhelmed."*

Purchases at other long term food supply companies are up as well.* Emergency preparedness online store TheEpicenter reports a 6 percent uptick in year over year sales.*

*What's feeding this new urgency?*

Survivalist consumers says they're *preparing for post-election unrest that could involve everything from massive riots, to power grid outages, to the total collapse of the financial system where a can of food becomes currency.*

And it's not just guys digging a hole on their farm and filling it with MRE's who are driving sales, companies say, but *schoolteachers, moms, and successful financial planners.* Nor is it limited to just rural areas.

*For $2,000 spent at Legacy Foods, you could eat three square meals a day for an entire year.* That's 1,080 servings. TheEpicenter has a 14-day supply kit for $235 that's recently been "selling really well," said owner Bryan Nelson. The most popular entry-level seller at My Patriot Supply is a 3-month supply for $497. It comes a in nondescript gray slim line totes bin designed to be easy to stack in the back of a closet or slip under your bed. *Big name retailers are in on the game.* Costco sells a 1-month supply of 390 servings in plastic gallon buckets for $114.99. Wal-Mart has a bucket deal, too.

As one 41-year-old "urban prepper" from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania predicts, *a Trump win will see the urban poor revolting across the nation and the imposition of martial law to quell riots and the burning of businesses.*

But he's also getting ready for the possibility of a Clinton victory that he says could lead to conflict with Russia and "World War 3 in 2017."

Either way, Freddy's ready - with both supplies and a word of advice.

*"At minimum stock up your cabinets as if you knew a hurricane was coming," he said. "It'll be like a hurricane that could touch every city in America."*

*"You hear them saying, no matter who wins, I know I could take a positive step myself and secure what's important," he said. "They're securing their food supply."*

Simply put, as SHTFPlan.com's Mac Slavo writes, there will come a time when it's too late and you'll be begging to have your old life back...

With the things heating up just days before what is arguably the craziest Presidential election in American history, Joe Joseph weighs in on the latest leaks, the potential for post-election unrest, and looming crisis.

They’re so worried about… ‘maybe at the end of the day I might not be able to sit in my Barca lounger at the end of the night’ or ‘I might not be able to watch that football game on Sunday’… Let me tell you… If things go the way that The Powers That Shouldn’t Be want them, there will be no Barca lounges and there will be no NFL.

So it’s either we do things now while we have the chance… because *there will come a time when it’s too late.. and you will be begging to  have your old life back.*

And the answer’s going to be, ‘you had the opportunity and now it’s gone.’

There’s a lot of things here in the United States, in the western world and in society that we used to have and used to enjoy… quality of life… the ability to earn a liveable wage… fast evoparting… those used to be a lot more present… people used to be a lot more comfortable..

*And it’s just not the case anymore… And it’s only going to get worse…*

Unless we the people draw the line in the sand and we stick with it.

California Secessionists To Meet At Capitol Day After Presidential Election

California Secessionists To Meet At Capitol Day After Presidential Election Submitted by Joseph Jankowki via PlanetFreeWill.com,

*An organization which has the aims out separating the state of California from the Union of the United States is set to hold a meeting at the state capitol in Sacramento on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, the day after the presidential election.*

The Yes California Independence Campaign, which is based in San Diego, describes itself as a *“nonviolent campaign to establish the country of California using any and all legal and constitutional means to do so.”*

The group is currently trying to qualify a citizen’s initiative in 2018 to get a referendum for secession on the ballot in 2019, reports SF Gate. *They will be in Sacramento in hopes to gather support for the state’s exit, or the “Calexit”, as they call it.*

*“In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children,” *reads Yes California’s official website.

The group’s page reads on:

Although charity is part of our culture, when you consider that California’s infrastructure is falling apart, our public schools are ranked among the worst in the entire country, we have the highest number of homeless persons living without shelter and other basic necessities, poverty rates remain high, income inequality continues to expand, and we must often borrow money from the future to provide services for today, now is not the time for charity.

However, this independence referendum is about more than California subsidizing other states of this country. It is about the right to self-determination and the concept of voluntary association, both of which are supported by constitutional and international law.

It is about California taking its place in the world, standing as an equal among nations. We believe in two fundamental truths: (1) California exerts a positive influence on the rest of the world, and (2) California could do more good as an independent country than it is able to do as a just a U.S. state.

*Yes California’s website lays out 9 different points *covering topics the group believes will benefit from a California exit from the US, including education, peace and security, debt and taxes and immigration...

*THE CASE FOR INDEPENDENCE IN 9 SIMPLE POINTS*
Being a U.S. state is no longer serving California’s best interests. On issues ranging from peace and security to natural resources and the environment, it has become increasingly true that California would be better off as an independent country. Here’s a summary of why we think so.

*1. PEACE AND SECURITY*
The U.S. Government spends more on its military than the next several countries combined. Not only is California forced to subsidize this massive military budget with our taxes, but Californians are sent off to fight in wars that often do more to perpetuate terrorism than to abate it. The only reason terrorists might want to attack us is because we are part of the United States and are guilty by association. Not being a part of that country will make California a less likely target of retaliation by its enemies.

*2. ELECTIONS AND GOVERNMENT*
California’s electoral votes haven’t affected a presidential election since 1876. On top of that, presidential election results are often known before our votes are even counted. So, why should we keep subjecting ourselves to presidents we play no role in electing, to 382 representatives and 98 senators we can’t vote for, and all the government officials and federal judges appointed by those very same people we don’t elect.

*3. TRADE AND REGULATION*
The U.S. Government maintains a burdensome trade system that hurts California’s economy by making trade more difficult and more expensive for California’s businesses. As long as California remains within this burdensome trade system, we will never be able to capitalize on the trade and investment opportunities that would be available to us as an independent country. On top of that, the United States is dragging California into the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement which conflicts with our values.

*4. DEBT AND TAXES*
Since 1987, California has been subsidizing the other states at a loss of tens and sometimes hundreds of billions of dollars in a single fiscal year. As a result, we are often forced to raise taxes and charge fees in California, and borrow money from the future to make up the difference. This is partly why California presently has some of the highest taxes in the country, and so much debt. Independence means that all of our taxes will be kept in California based on the priorities we set, and we will be able to do so while repaying our debts and phasing out the current state income tax.

*5. IMMIGRATION*
California is the most diverse state in the United States and that is something we are proud of. This diversity is a central part of our culture and an indispensable part of our economy. As a U.S. state, our immigration system was largely designed by the 49 other states thirty years ago. This immigration system has since neglected the needs of the California economy and has hurt too many California families. Independence means California will be able to decide what immigration policies make sense for our diverse and unique population, culture, and economy, and that we’ll be able to build an immigration system that is consistent with our values.

*6. NATURAL RESOURCES*
Certain minerals and other natural resources like coal, oil, and natural gas are being extracted from California at below market value rates by private corporations with the permission of the U.S. Government. While a small portion of the revenue is shared with us, our share has been withheld during times of sequestration. That means the U.S. Government is paying their debts with royalties collected from selling off California’s natural resources. Independence means we will gain control of the 46% of California that is currently owned by the U.S. Government and its agencies. We will therefore take control of our natural resources and be the sole beneficiary of royalties collected if and when they are extracted from our lands.

*7. THE ENVIRONMENT*
California is a global leader on environmental issues. However, as long as the other states continue debating whether or not climate change is real, they will continue holding up real efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The truth is this country accounts for less than five percent of the world’s population yet consumes one-third of the world’s paper, a quarter of the world’s oil, 27 percent of the aluminum, 23 percent of the coal, and 19 percent of the copper. Independence means California will be able to negotiate treaties to not only reduce the human impact on our climate but also to help build global resource sustainability.

*8. HEALTH AND MEDICINE*
The Affordable Care Act was enacted by the U.S. Government to lower the cost of health care and expand health insurance coverage to the uninsured, yet millions of Californians still lack access to quality health care because they can’t afford it. For many, access to hospitals and medicine is a life or death issue. Independence means we can fund the health care programs we want and ensure everyone has access to the medicines they need because our taxes will no longer be subsidizing other states. Finally, California can join the rest of the industrialized world in guaranteeing health care as a universal right for all of our people.

*9. EDUCATION*
California has some of the best universities but in various ways, our schools are among the worst in the country. Not only does this deprive our children of the education they deserve, but it also costs taxpayers billions in social services and law enforcement expenses linked to lacking opportunities resulting from poor education. Independence means we will be able to fully fund public education, rebuild and modernize public schools, and pay public school teachers the salaries they deserve. On top of that, independence means freedom from federal education policies and one-size-fits-all standards set by political appointees on the other side of the continent.

One blog post on their page* draws parallels with a “Calexit” and the recent referendum known as “Brexit” *that passed in the UK in June which showed that most British people are ready for their country to leave the EU.

*The push for secession is nothing new to California.* In 1941 the mayor of Port Orford, Oregon, Gilbert Gable, proposed the idea to push the Oregon counties of Curry, Josephine, Jackson, and Klamath to join with the California counties of Del Norte, Siskiyou, and Modoc to form a new state, later named Jefferson.

Modoc County of Northern California voted in 2013 to join neighboring Siskiyou County in a push to secede from the State of California.

In 2014, two counties in northern California petitioned for the right to form a 51st State of America, which they also wanted to name Jefferson. Reported by Zero Hedge 8 hours ago.

Brace yourself for another year of stinging health insurance costs.

As open enrollment periods begin in workplaces, workers are facing the annual shock of rising health care costs. You may not see a horrible rise in premiums — at least not an increase as extreme as the last few years. But you are... Reported by ChicagoTribune 17 hours ago.

For the love of America, VOTE!

I know we are better than electing Trump, America. I know we are better than putting a man who is a sexual predator and bigot, a man who has caused serial bankruptcies, a man who can be baited to send unhinged Tweets at 3am, a man who is a bully and not a leader into the Oval Office. I'm ignoring the fluctuating polls. I have faith.

I have faith that everyone who can vote, will find a way to vote.

I have faith that people will remind their friends, family, and neighbors that *ballots need to be in by close of business this Tuesday, November 8th*. Not everyone is paying attention to the election details. My own twenty-year-old son asked me the other day if the deadline for him to vote had passed. It hadn't. He was incredibly relieved when I told him he still had time to vote. So think of reminding people about November 8th as a community service. Share election information on your social media outlets, including this article. Studies show that sharing on Facebook has a big impact on encouraging people to vote. People want to know this type of information and will thank you for it.

I have faith that people will *spread the word on when, where, and how people can vote*. Here's some information to share: People can get their voting location texted directly to their cell phones by texting the message "Vote" to the number 747464, which spells RISING. Or, just go to Google, which has set up a special system, and type in "How do I vote in INSERT YOUR STATE NAME HERE."

I have faith that people will *make a plan to vote* on Tuesday, November 8th. Bring kids to vote. Make it a party. You can even peek at your ballot in advance and get information that will help you figure out and plan how you want to fill out your ballot. Just plug in your address to this website www.ballotpedia.org and tons of information about the candidates, tailored to your ballot so you can plan how to vote, will be at your fingertips.

People across the country have your back. *If you have problems voting or see something that looks like voter suppression or voter intimidation, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) to speak with an Election Protection expert for free.* And the number for Spanish speakers is: 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA. It's against the law for people to stop other people from voting in any way. Legal experts are available to you at no cost to protect your rights.

In our country, voting is our most important right and responsibility. No one can take that away from you.

*Vote. Vote for Hillary. *There's no perfect candidate. And there never will be. But you can't get much better than Hillary Clinton, a woman who has spent decades effectively fighting for children, families, and our nation; won healthcare advancements like the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), equal pay protections like the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and advanced affordable childcare, paid family/medical leave, and more for all of us; a woman who is focused on bringing our country together instead of pitting us against each other. Hillary Clinton is more than qualified to be President and has proven herself over and over again in the face of years of intense, highly funded smear campaigns against her.

To be clear though, this election isn't about measuring against perfect. Donald Trump is the other nominee--and Hillary Clinton, the first woman to be nominated by a major party, is unfairly being held to different standard of perfection than Donald Trump. The fact that a large percentage of this election has centered around the sexist treatment of women by men, including by Donald Trump, and that we have the first woman running in this position is not a coincidence.

Don't get pulled into that vortex of sexist false equivalencies. Want an example of this? Unbelievably some people have been equalizing the recent emails found on Hillary's staff's soon-to-be ex-husband's computer (emails which news reports say weren't even to or from Hillary and after further review breaking news from the head of the FBI, a Republican, on Sunday announced that no charges against Clinton are warranted on this matter) with Trump's repetitive unhinged racist, sexist, bigoted and xenophobic behavior that makes the front page so often it's become a blur.

Some reference points in the blur of Trump's unhinged behavior include: Trump's attacks on the Khans, the Gold Star Muslim family whose son gave his life defending our country; Trump saying he won't necessarily accept election results, which is about the most un-American thing a Presidential candidate can say; Trump stating you should just "grab them by the p--sy"; Trump's ongoing hounding of the Central Park 5, the five teenagers of color who were exonerated on DNA evidence and a confession by the real perpetrator; and Trump's pronouncement that the judge presiding in the racketeering lawsuit against Trump University could not be impartial because his parents are Mexican -- all of this has become numbing background static to our political discourse.

It can't be overlooked that Trump is also under investigation for fraud with Trump University, appears to be supported by foreign governments meddling in our election, has pushed his companies into multiple bankruptcies, won't release his tax returns as every other candidate has done who has ever run for this office, and regularly incites violence against our own nation and has said he'd jail his opponent if he wins.

That's bullying behavior by Trump, not leadership. These are not actions or words we'd ever want our children to hear or mimic, no matter who said them. Donald Trump is quite simply unfit for the Presidency.

*For the love of America, vote. * And cast your ballot for a true leader, Hillary Clinton. There's never been a more critical time to vote than now.

Obama's Plan to Destroy America Has Failed Miserably

President Barack Obama speaks at a campaign event for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, Florida, Sunday, November 6, 2016.

Barack Obama will be president for only two more months, and any judgment of his presidency will have to account for all he failed to accomplish. Consider this partial list of things Obama was supposed to do but never did:

· Destroy America's image and influence in the world
· Dismantle our military
· Send us into a Greece-like debt spiral that would crash the economy
· Institute a government takeover of all health care
· Kill elderly and disabled people who had become a drain on the system
· Transition the U.S. to communism
· Outlaw Christianity
· Reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine then use it as a tool to silence conservative media
· Force gas prices up to $8 or $10 a gallon to make driving impossible
· Open the borders to a flood of undocumented immigrants
· Confiscate Americans' guns
· Throw dissenters into concentration camps
· Force whites to pay reparations to blacks in order to wreak vengeance for the sins of the past
· Declare martial law and cancel the 2016 election so he could stay in office

As I said, that's only a partial list. If you go back to look at the way conservatives were talking eight years ago, the level of panic they demonstrated is nothing short of comical. Sometimes the terms were literally apocalyptic, painting a horrifying picture of the wreckage an Obama presidency would leave behind. But even those who stayed away from the most ridiculous claims agreed that his administration would be an unmitigated disaster. And critically, while they sometimes said that Obama was stupid and incompetent (He can't even talk without a teleprompter, har har!), more often they asserted that it was all a careful plan: Obama wasn't just going to destroy America, he wanted to destroy America.

This is an idea they have never let go of. You'll recall the primary debates, when Marco Rubio was mocked for repeating over and over, "Let's dispel with the notion that Barack Obama doesn't know what he's doing. He knows exactly what he's doing." Rubio is supposed to be one of the sensible Republicans, and his point—which neither his opponents nor any other conservative seemed to disagree with—was that Obama was carrying out a plan to intentionally harm, diminish, or completely destroy the United States of America.

So here we are, with just weeks to go. How's that plan working out? It appears that it has failed. Obama has overseen the creation of 15 million jobs since the bottom of the Great Recession a year after he took office. Inflation is all but nonexistent, wages are rising, and GDP growth is getting stronger. Gas is at around $2 a gallon, and America is practically energy-independent, due not only to an explosion in the development of renewables but also the spread of fracking, which has vastly increased domestic supplies of oil and natural gas (which somehow happened despite Obama's radical anti-fossil-fuel agenda).

And that's just the beginning. America is admired all over the world. The Affordable Care Act has some challenges, but it has given 20 million more people health insurance, slowed the rise in health-care spending, and brought unprecedented health security to Americans—without killing any old people and while leaving the bulk of the health-care system in private hands. Obama hasn't opened the borders; in fact, there are fewer undocumented immigrants in the U.S. today than there were when he took office. Those FEMA concentration camps were never set up, he didn't turn America communist, and he didn't confiscate anyone's guns. Christianity, as far as I can tell, is still legal.

And I'm fairly certain he's going to depart the White House in January, even if Donald Trump were to win.

If you're a conservative, you may be extremely unhappy with the choices Obama has made and the things he has done. But you'd have to admit that the predictions you and your allies made about about how Obama would turn this great country into a hellscape of suffering and despair didn't quite pan out. So what happened?

There are a few possibilities. First, perhaps Obama just forgot. He was going to take away our guns and outlaw dissent, but you know how it is—other things get in the way, then the holidays roll around, and before you know it eight years have gone by and you haven't even fixed that loose railing in the residence, let alone herded your opponents into concentration camps.

Or perhaps Obama tried to do all those things but was thwarted by heroic Republicans. But that's not an easy argument to make, particularly when you're also saying that he's a tyrant who spits on the Constitution every day as he goes about doing whatever he wants.

Or—and stick with me here, because I'm going to suggest something crazy—perhaps Obama was never trying to destroy America in the first place. The things he said about what he wanted to accomplish and how he'd go about it were basically true. He made a bunch of proposals when he ran for president, and at least tried to follow through on the vast majority of them. There wasn't a hidden agenda, there was a genuine agenda, whether you liked it or not.

And he actually wanted things to go well. Like all presidents he wanted the economy to thrive under his watch, and did what he could to make that happen. He wanted America's foreign policy to succeed. He wanted a health care system that provided security and was as affordable as possible. He didn't want to snuff out free enterprise, or religion, or the spark of hope that burns within every American heart. He was trying to do his best.

I suspect that many or perhaps even most elite Republicans know this to be true. But they also know that telling their followers that their political opponents are out to destroy all they hold dear is pretty good for business. Just consider an article that ran over the weekend in The New York Times, about gun enthusiasts heading to the Georgia woods for paramilitary training in preparation for the civil war that's sure to come should Hillary Clinton become president. "We thought it was bad under eight years of Obama, but the gun-grabbing is going to get a whole lot worse if Hillary gets elected," one militia member said.

He has been told in every election he can remember that if the Democrats win they're going to take his guns. It never happens, and yet he's actually convinced that 1) there has been gun-grabbing going on under Obama, and 2) it'll be even worse under Clinton. This nincompoop and millions of people like him are the audience for those predictions of doom whenever a Democratic president is elected.

Republicans' eagerness to exploit and encourage that kind of stupidity is what makes it so difficult to resolve ordinary political differences. Because in order to resolve them, both sides have to accept that they are in fact ordinary, that the world is not going to end if one side prevails, and that somebody who has a substantive disagreement with you about policy isn't necessarily a demon bent on ripping you open and feasting on your entrails.

But that's what Republicans have told their constituents to believe—and despite the fact that their dark predictions about the destruction Obama would wreak never came to pass, they'll be saying the same things about Clinton. In one recent poll of Florida voters, 40 percent of those voting for Donald Trump agreed with the assertion that Clinton is literally a demon. I wish that were a joke, but it isn't. Neither is this election, and neither is the next four years. Reported by The American Prospect 23 hours ago.

Just in Time for Open Enrollment, New Health Insurance Guide Helps Consumers Navigate Choices to Make Informed Decisions

‘Choosing A Health Plan,’ a free guide about healthcare coverage published by White Plains Hospital, helps consumers avoid unexpected costs

White Plains, NY (PRWEB) November 07, 2016

HMO’s, PPO’s, co-pays, co-insurance… Yes, open enrollment time is here, a time when millions of consumers will be overwhelmed with complex information on policies, premiums, and coverage that can have dramatic financial implications down the road. To clear confusion and help with decision-making, White Plains Hospital is offering a free, downloadable guide for consumers to help them make informed decisions. The guide is available through the Hospital’s website at http://www.wphospital.org/insuranceguide.

“Choosing A Health Plan: It Pays to Know Your Options” offers the following information:· Tips for estimating how much coverage you will need
· Financial strategies for funding expected healthcare costs
· The risks and benefits of choosing a High-Deductible Health Plan
· A glossary of key health insurance terms
· How provider networks work and what they cover

The guide was written to help consumers make more informed health plan choices, whether they purchase coverage through their employer or on the New York State of Health marketplace. “Our goal is to help people in the community avoid unexpected healthcare costs,” says Joseph J. Guarracino, CFO of White Plains Hospital. “Whether you are using an employer-provided plan, or evaluating coverage on the health insurance exchange, it’s important to consider how much coverage you might need, how much your monthly premium will cover, and what you may be responsible for if you have a significant health event.”

Since the Affordable Care Act created state health insurance exchanges, the number of people with health insurance has grown. In 2015, the percentage of people without health insurance coverage for the entire calendar year was 9.1%, or 29 million, lower than the rate and number of uninsured in 2014 (10.4% or 33 million), according to the US Census Bureau. The US Census also notes that the percentage of people with health insurance coverage for all or part of 2015 was 90.9%, higher than the rate in 2014 (89.6%). But, as more and more consumers are getting the health coverage they need, the decision-making process is difficult and available information is hard to comprehend. A 2016 Harris Poll reported on PlanSponsor.com found that nearly half (49%) of employees eligible for employer-sponsored benefits said making health insurance decisions is “always stressful,” and 41% of employees found their companies’ open enrollment process “very confusing.”

The health insurance guide can be downloaded through the White Plains Hospital website, and will be available in waiting rooms at the Hospital, and through its outpatient medical facilities in New Rochelle and Armonk through the end of January 2017.

Move Over, Katy Perry. This Nerdy Professor Has His Own Closing Argument To Make For Clinton.

$

The Clinton campaign has put together its “closing” advertisement ― a high-budget, smoothly produced montage of voters and Hillary clips set to Katy Perry music.

Now a nerdy professor from the Midwest is trying to get in on the action, by producing his own closing video about the election and why he is supporting Clinton.

It’s a low-budget, single-camera sequence, featuring the professor speaking directly to voters from inside a coffee shop. And with nearly 25,000 views already between YouTube and Facebook, there are signs it’s going viral.

The scholar is Harold Pollack, the Helen Ross professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Pollack is an expert in public health and poverty, and over the years has done fieldwork on everything from violence prevention to anti-tobacco strategies.

Pollack is widely respected in academia and well-known to fellow nerds in journalism because he’s an unfailingly civil, intellectually honest authority on such a variety of policy subjects. But he’s also something of a cult hero, thanks to some* *homegrown videos he’s produced previously ― including a pair of spots he did in 2012, spotlighting the importance of Medicaid, particularly for people who have disabilities.

For Pollack, that issue is personal. He is a primary caregiver for a close relative with severe disabilities. And that may help explain why he decided to get back in front of the camera this year. One of the most unfortunately iconic moments of this campaign was Donald Trump’s mocking of a journalist with a physical disability.

“I find it unsurprising that a man who speaks with such disparaging vulgarity about women and many minorities would bring the same mentality to issues of disability,” Pollack, emailing from what he jokingly calls his super PAC headquarters, told The Huffington Post.

The video is a little more subtle, at least when it comes to Trump. It refers to the Republican nominee mostly by implication, like when Pollack says, “America needs leaders who bring us together, who embrace rather than resent the growing diversity of our country, who do their homework.”

But the video isn’t primarily an attack on Trump. Mostly it’s a disquisition on Clinton, and the skills Pollack thinks she would bring to the Oval Office.

“She leads by listening, by building bridges with people who are very different from herself,” Pollack says, before telling viewers about Clinton’s history of trying to help people with disabilities and to expand health insurance coverage ― and to fight for gender equality at home and around the world.

Pollack also notes that independent fact-checking organizations rated Clinton’s campaign statements the most truthful of this election cycle.* *“She gets way too little credit for that,” he says.

Pollack ends the video by encouraging people to get involved on behalf of a cause or candidate they support, but to do so with the same commitment to civility he tries to show: “Be positive and respectful, but communicate what’s at stake this time.”

Voting for Human Dignity

I am in the politics business, so the fall of a presidential election year is what you might call my busy season. Four years ago in October, though, in the middle of all that craziness, I took a several-day break because of news from home that my brother Kevin had a stroke and was close to death. My wife and I didn't make it home before he died, but I spent several days with family, mourning, remembering, and celebrating him before heading back for the final weeks election push.

I have been thinking a lot about Kevin this election season, not only because of his death four years ago, but because of the infamous video of Trump mocking a reporter with a disability. My brother had a number of serious disabilities. Kevin's birth father broke a chair over his head when he was little and gave him brain damage, making him developmentally disabled and making it hard for him to speak clearly. As an adult, he developed a number of other problems as he was hard of hearing, couldn't see well, and had muscular dystrophy.

But Kevin was the kind of guy that no matter what he was struggling with, he made the world around him a better place. Everyone in my family, and the many other friends he had, were better people, much better, because of knowing him.

You know, it isn't only that Trump insulted my brother and the millions of people all over this country with disabilities, or that he has insulted women, Latinos, Muslims, immigrants, African-Americans, and so many others. It's that he just doesn't get it on a far deeper level. He doesn't get the nature of good and evil itself, and that, as Joe Biden would say, is a big f'ing deal.

One thing that explains the mystery of how Trump got to be the way he is: he has said he is a fan of Ayn Rand, and has likened himself to Howard Roark, the "hero" in one of her novels, The Fountainhead. There's a certain irony to Trump comparing himself to Roark given that Roark raped a woman in the novel, and that he engaged in acts of violent terrorism, but as I said, Trump's view of good and evil is, to put it mildly, perverted.

That Trump says he is a fan of Rand isn't the least bit surprising. Rand believed that greed is good, that selfishness is the ultimate virtue, and that generosity and kindness are bad things that only encourage people to be lazy. She especially disliked people with disabilities, whom she considered leeches on society that deserved to die. She believed that pretty much anything a businessperson did to impose their will on others was fair game.

Donald Trump -- complete with sexual assault; rooting for a housing crisis, so that he could make out like a bandit; finding questionable ways to avoid paying his taxes; and making fun of people with disabilities -- is quite literally the embodiment of the Ayn Rand philosophy.

But what Rand and Trump would never understand is that people like my brother Kevin raise humanity up, instead of "leech" off of us. Kevin was kindness and courage personified. I wrote about him shortly before he died in 2012:
He has always shown great tenderness to the people around him, and still does. He can't talk right now because he is on a ventilator, but his expressive hands still say a great deal. After I was watching him go through strenuous rehab exercises, I came over to him after he was done and asked how he was doing, and he just grinned and patted me on my too-big tummy, not only telling me he was okay, but that maybe I should be doing more exercise, too.

Even with all the tubes attached to him, he was still up for playing catch with a plastic ball in his room. He still had smiles for, and played ball with, a five-year-old girl who came to see him. One of the nurses at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital told me how touched she had been when he gave her a hug even though she was doing painful rehab exercises she knew he didn't like.

He still gave me all kinds of trouble, taking delight in showing me two stuffed dogs people had given him because he had named the big dog Kevin and the little dog Mike. And when I had to leave to go the airport and had tears in my eyes as I was leaning down to hug him goodbye, he rubbed my head to comfort me. I had come to comfort him in his time of pain, and he had comforted me even more. Kevin being a part of my life has been such a gift to me, and has made me 100 times better a person.

Kevin has also shaped my values and philosophy of life, and given me a perspective on policy issues. Conservatives are obsessed with the idea that somewhere, somehow there are lazy "undeserving" welfare recipients, but more than 90 percent of government support dollars go to the elderly, people working hard but are still below the poverty line because of low-wage jobs, and very disabled people like Kevin -- those whose middle-class families like mine would be plunged into poverty if we had to pay for all their medical costs on our own...

It is Kevin whom I thought about when the audience at a Republican debate cheered about a man who had no health insurance dying. It is Kevin whom I thought of when an audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference laughed and cheered when Glenn Beck gleefully proclaimed that "in nature, the lions eat the weak."

A society that does not value my brother Kevin at least as much as it does the Wall Street titans who grow rich as they speculate with other people's money, and use the tax code to write off the debt they use to buy and sell companies regardless of the consequences to the families who work there, is a sick society. A government that would cut support to middle-class families trying to support their disabled children, so the wealthy can get more tax breaks -- a government that actually decides to help the wealthy and powerful more than the poor and disabled -- would be a government with no decency.

Like Ayn Rand before him, Donald Trump has a soul too twisted to understand the enormous value that people like my brother Kevin give to this world. And it's not just them. The Republican Party has mostly endorsed and embraced Trump, in spite of his mocking of people with disabilities, his misogyny, his bigotry, his bragging about sexual assault.

And if even if you look past the support of Trump, their policy ideas show their values. The budgets that Paul Ryan has submitted year after year slash the budget for Medicaid and Social Security disability, leaving the middle-class families of people like my brother unable to pay for their medical bills and day-to-day care.

Please vote in this election, and get every friend you have out to vote as well. Vote on behalf of basic human decency, and vote against a worldview that embraces selfishness and greed. Every election matters, but this one matters more than any I've ever seen. So for all of our sakes: vote.

A breakout polling outlet 'broke the dam' in 2016, and now it wants to become 'the Bloomberg of public opinion'

A breakout polling outlet 'broke the dam' in 2016, and now it wants to become 'the Bloomberg of public opinion' Michael Ramlet couldn't help but notice that the polling profession "still looked like the 1980s" when he was working at Purple Strategies, a communications firm in Washington, DC.

Ramlet wanted to take advantage of how little the field had been penetrated by more advanced technology. Along with a couple of co-founders, he took in $30,000 in angel investments to start a polling venture.

"None of us quit our day jobs," he told Business Insider. "None of us were going to quit until we knew this could actually be a thing."

Flash forward three years from Morning Consult's meager start in 2013, and the polling outlet is partnering with publications such as Politico, Vox, and Bloomberg to deliver some of the fastest, most thorough polls of the 2016 cycle.

Ramlet, Morning Consult's CEO, spoke of how the outlet was the first to show Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont above 30% in the New Hampshire primary. He also noted how their poll displayed Republican candidate Donald Trump's support as solid enough to withstand his at-the-time seemingly campaign-crushing remarks about Sen. John McCain's military service.

Morning Consult's initial polls following each of the presidential debates, the leaked "Access Hollywood" tape, and FBI Director James Comey's bombshell letter to congressional leaders came well before their competitors were able to go live.

"I'd be kidding you if I said we'd be where we are now three years ago," Ramlet told Business Insider, adding that the company went from that initial $30,000 to now projecting more than $7 million in bookings this year.

*Beginnings*

The outlet more or less was born out of a healthcare email newsletter Ramlet, now 29, had started when he was in college at the University of Minnesota.

Morning Consult officially launched with a 2,000-person poll looking at whether young and uninsured Americans were going to sign up for the Affordable Care Act's insurance exchanges right before they went live in 2013. The White House used that poll in its briefing later that day.

"One of the biggest problems in old-school polling is that they have really small sample sizes," Ramlet said. "Because they have to pay people to sit in chairs and make phone calls, and that was easy to do in the 1950s when everyone answered their phone calls on their home telephones, but harder to do in 2013 where response rates were really low. So we said no one has any idea if the young and uninsured want to buy health insurance."

After appearing in the White House briefing, Ramlet said he was contacted by a Fortune 500 healthcare company within two weeks to buy their polling technology. A week later, a DC media company made an offer to purchase the entire outlet.

"So we were like, 'Oh, s---, we should probably quit our day jobs now and make this a thing,'" he said.

The company would soon start to grow. Initially operating out of a row house near Capitol Hill, the firm grew from 13 employees to roughly 40 and a larger office space.

The row house "might have been the most depressing office space we've ever seen," Meghan McCarthy, Morning Consult's chief content officer, told Business Insider. She added that the goal of the company when founded was to provide issue-based polling that the cofounders felt was lacking in the polling industry.

But by the time Morning Consult moved into its new office, the "horse-race polling" for the 2016 cycle "really took off," McCarthy added.

"Because we were in the field every single week, we were one of the first places to see Bernie Sanders was picking up steam in New Hampshire, when he wasn't really viewed as a serious candidate against Hillary Clinton," she said. "And still early in the Republican field, we saw Donald Trump consistently polling numbers in the 30s, and that wasn't something that polling places were out there with yet. Realized we were the only place doing this and we were doing it very well."

*
On to 2016*

Morning Consult's initial polling on Trump and Sanders helped to catapult the group into the national discussion in the 2016 polling realm.

"I think my cofounder lost six pounds within 48 hours after we released that [Sanders] poll," Ramlet said, noting the nerves that came with having Sanders above 30% when the prior New Hampshire polling had him garnering less than 10% of the vote.

During the primary season, a major story in the polls was how Trump was performing better in online surveys than in traditional polls, as shown in The Washington Post. But as the primary season wound down, it was clear Trump's assessment in the online polls was not an inaccurate projection of where the race would end up, as he easily eclipsed the needed delegates to clinch the nomination. It was validation for outlets such as Morning Consult.

The rationale for this was simple, Ramlet said. During the primary season, there was still a "social desirability" bias at play — meaning, some people were not willing to say they supported Trump in a live interview but were willing to do so online.

"Not surprisingly, there was not the same level of comfort in saying you were a Trump supporter," he said. "If you're higher educated, higher income, you were less likely to admit that you were a Trump supporter in a live telephone interview than in the anonymous environment. When we got the results it was like, 'Holy s---, this is exactly what's happening. All the old-school pollsters are going to get it wrong again.'"

But as a study published last week by the firm found, that effect has been virtually wiped out in the general election.

Ramlet acknowledged, as a relatively new, online polling outlet, it took plenty of shots from the old-school pollsters for their validity. As statistician Nate Cohn proclaimed in The New York Times last year, "ready or not," online polling had arrived in 2016. Public-opinion researchers predicted internet polling would overtake telephone polling, but they had hoped it would not happen before "online polling was ready."

The most common attack against online pollsters is that there is no way to randomly and scientifically contact people on the internet, while telephone polling still provides the opportunity to conduct random, scientific samples.

Ramlet considers that excuse to be a weak excuse telephone pollsters use to stay in business.

"It's a really convenient excuse for why they think people should still do live telephone polling, but it doesn't pass the sniff test," he said.

He added:

"Their first argument is that you can't get a random sample, which is totally true if this is 1950. Like, anyone can possibly be interviewed because anyone can pick up their live telephone poll. The problem is, no one picks up their live telephone poll anymore. So they don't have probability anymore either."

"Many Americans don't even have access to the telephone, so they can't even claim what they're claiming to have achieved. That was the easiest way to keep the media folks from reporting on the new technologies, was to kind of create this. The reason they did it is sort of a really legitimate business reason. They all bought call centers. So they have to defend the methodology until they're dead."

Though he said he wouldn't defend every online polling outlet, praising both SurveyMonkey and YouGov in the online polling sphere, Ramlet said the "smart people are getting the hell out of the phone game."

"It isn't rocket science," he said. "People aren't answering their phones. Smaller samples than everyone else, and their claim to more accurate samples is just factually wrong."

Here's how Morning Consult's online polling works: The firm uses a stratified sampling process and sends out a survey to multiple vendors, which it said gives it access to tens of millions of Americans. On average, the surveys are being taken by 1,000 people per day, and can include questions based on video and images.

The firm then weights the results when returned, which it said are able to be much lower than other online polls based on the number of people to which they have access. Then come the published results, with the entire process taking just a couple of days.

Telephone pollsters, having to contract out a phone bank to make calls, take about three to seven days to have results returned and published.

In August, the data-journalism outlet FiveThirtyEight found that Morning Consult had the lowest "house effect" among all national firms that conducted at least five national polls this cycle. That means the firm's samples were the least pro-Clinton or pro-Trump of all outlets.

Telephone pollsters "correctly did see us as a threat, we were a threat," Ramlet said. "Basically we're saying, 'You're more like weather forecasters, whereas we're meteorologists.'"

"This election is where the dam finally broke," he added. "You just can't get it wrong for a third time in this many elections."

*
The future*

The firm has three divisions: A research and data science team, a technology team for its "Intelligence" platform, and a newsroom filled with 15 reporters and editors that report based on data created by the research team.

Once the dust from the 2016 election settles, Ramlet said, Morning Consult will make an increased effort to conduct market-research based polling and to beef up the Intelligence platform, a tool that allows a user to pull information from past questions asked in surveys and overlay them with other trends to create custom charts, graphs, and slides.

And, they'll still be well-entrenched in politics.

"We wanted to make it really easy to search all those questions," Ramlet said of the platform. "Even like [RealClearPolitics] and those platforms still feel like the 1990s. There's more to polling and market research than just tracking the presidential race. There are a lot of questions that would be good to provide relevance on ... I think this is really where we're going to be going moving forward here after the election."

The goal, the firm said, is to become the largest source of public-opinion data, regardless of the subject.

"We want to be the Bloomberg of public opinion," McCarthy said.

In the next four years, the polling debate over online vs. telephone surveys will have likely reached its nexus — and Morning Consult believes they're well positioned.

"If you think about the research and the survey side, eight years ago the debate was about cell phones and landlines and how much to include," Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult's chief research officer, told Business Insider. "Now the what we see in 2016 is that online polling is the right means of data-collection."

He said that will be defining in the next election.

For Ramlet, the 2020 election cycle will be "dramatically different" from a polling aspect. He joked that "for all I know," polling could be "Oculus Rift" driven.

"Candidly, I think what you're going to see is that these traditional outlets are going to be further flanked by companies like ours and Survey Monkey and YouGov," he said. "And the technology is passing them by."

Diving Into The Medical CPI: Are Your Medical Expenses Up Only 5% From Year Ago? Submitted by Michael Shedlock via MishTalk.com,

On November 1, I posted a couple of charts from Variant Perception that shows *medical price inflation plus rent inflation is up nearly 9% from a year ago.*

Let’s review those charts, then take a look at a series of charts from the St. Louis Fed data repository on medical expenses alone.

*Retail Sales vs. Medical + Rental CPI Inverted*

*Consumer Discretionary Equities vs. Medical + Rental CPI Inverted*

The above charts from Variant Perception.

*Here is a trio of charts that show medical expenses are up 5% from a year ago.*

Commodities and services are the two major components medical care. Commodities includes prescriptions and devices, services include office visits and hospitalization.

*Inquiring minds are investigating the CPI Weight basket to see why reported costs are up so little despite massive increases in Obamacare premiums.*

*CPI Weights*

· Medical care constitutes 6.513 percentage points of the overall CPI basket.
· Physicians, dentists, eye care providers, and other medical professionals contribute 2.796.
· Dental services alone contribute 0.715 percentage points to the CPI.
· The BLS assigns a weight of just 0.487 to health care insurance.

In simple terms, the BLS tells us that dental services alone are nearly 50% more important than health care premiums.

*Healthcare Insurance Explanation*

Although medical insurance premiums are an important part of consumers’ medical spending, the direct pricing of health insurance policies is not included in the CPI. The BLS reassigns most of this spending to the other medical categories (such as Hospitals) that are paid for by insurance. The extreme difficulty distinguishing changes in insurance quality from changes in its price forces the CPI to use this indirect method.

Under this indirect method, the medical care index will not be affected by changes in policy characteristics, such as modifications to policy benefits and utilization changes. The approach implicitly assumes that the level of service from individual carriers is strictly a function of benefits paid.

*Flawed Assumptions*

Got that? The BLS assumes that regardless of what you pay, if the insurance company pays more to the hospital, you must have received more benefits!

I expect major revisions to this nonsense sometime down the road.

Tell me, are your medical expenses up only 5 percent from a year ago?

*Reader Comments*

GreenAcre: My company which employs 60K has raised premiums 35%, eliminated the individual for families (must reach family deductible for 80/20) and raised the out of pocket max to $12,000.

Anon: I have a grandfathered plan outside of Obamacare and my premiums tripled in the last 5.5 years and I have yet to get my 2017 rate. I am in Maryland I expect at least 30% more. I am a self employed CPA who prepares tax returns for small business. They buy the group policies outside of Obamacare. Their rates, deductibles, copays etc have massively increased since ACA started as well. They have switch to managed HMO plans with limited doctors and still have had massive rate increases.

*If You Like Your Plan You Can Keep It*

*Actual Results*

· United Health Care dumped 29 of 34 states.
· Millions of Americans have only a single choice.
· Only 6 of 29 Obamacare co-ops remain.
· Costs spiraling out of control.
· Young, healthy citizens opt to pay penalty than overpay.

*Death Bed Math*

*Obamacare is on the death bed. Costs have soared, huge premium hikes are in the works for 2017, and benefits have been slashed.*

Meanwhile, the BLS posts preposterous statistics and the Fed seriously underestimates how much consumers are getting clobbered.

*Rate hikes cannot possible be the cure for this mess.*

The above comment is not an objection to hikes per se, it’s simply a statement of fact. I do not know where interest rates should be, and neither does the Fed.

Unfortunately, there is little price discovery in anything, certainly not in healthcare nor in interest rates.

*Expect Retail Sales to Suffer*
