Prevent Blindness Asks Parents to Put Their Children on the Path to a Successful School Year with a Complete Eye Exam

Prevent Blindness Declares August as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month to Educate Public on the Importance of Healthy Vision for Kids

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 14, 2016

To help put children on the path to a successful school year, Prevent Blindness urges parents to take their child for a complete eye exam from an eyecare professional. Prevent Blindness has declared August as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness month to inspire parents to make their child’s vision health a priority.

According to data from the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness (NCCVEH) report, “Children’s Vision and Eye Health: A Snapshot of Current National Issues,” visual functioning is a strong predictor of academic performance in school-age children. In addition, uncorrected refractive errors in infants and preschool-age children are associated with developmental delays, as well as with clinically identified deficits in cognitive and visual-motor functions that may in turn affect school readiness. Vision problems can be treated successfully if detected early. Vision screenings along with complete eye examinations are two critical ways to identify possible vision problems and get children connected to treatment.

Unfortunately for many families, cost and access to eye care is a limiting issue. The Affordable Care Act mandates that all plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace include vision coverage for children. In most states, that includes one comprehensive eye exam and one pair of eyeglasses. Prevent Blindness offers additional information and a free fact sheet, “The Affordable Care Act and Your Child's Eyes.” Or, visit the Prevent Blindness Vision Care Financial Assistance Information resource.

Vision requirements for school enrollment vary by state. The Children’s Vision and Eye Health report also includes information about state legislation for vision screening and/or mandated eye exams.

“Keeping children’s eyes healthy has been part of our organization’s mission for more than 100 years,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness. “Our goal is to provide parents and teachers with the tools and information they need to help ensure the vision health of our kids today and well into their future.”

To support children’s vision programs, OCuSOFT ® Inc., a privately-held eye and skin care company dedicated to innovation in eyelid hygiene and ocular health, has agreed to donate 10 percent of all online sales to Prevent Blindness during August’s Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month.

For more information on children’s eye health and safety, the NCCVEH, or eye care assistance programs, please call Prevent Blindness at (800) 331-2020 or visit preventblindness.org.

Convention Cash More Controversial Than Ever

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden celebrate their nominations on stage at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Political conventions have long been notorious for being rules-free zones where corporate donors may funnel fat checks to little-regulated host committees in exchange for exclusive cocktail receptions, briefings, and special-access events with candidates, party officials, and lawmakers.

But this year, the Republican and Democratic National Conventions have taken this wide-open fundraising to a whole new level. The checks are bigger. The disclosure is scantier. Both parties will inaugurate a number of dubious “firsts”—the first conventions with no public funding; the first conventions funneling six-figure checks into new, high-dollar party accounts; the first conventions in many years staged as early as July, to leave more time for general election fundraising. For Democrats, it will also be the first convention in eight years to permit lobbyist donations.

At the same time, mounting public outrage over political money, coupled with the controversial nature of presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump’s campaign, have complicated convention fundraising on both sides of the aisle. When Republicans gather in Cleveland next week, many Wall Street executives, K Street business lobbyists, and erstwhile corporate sponsors will stay home. Democrats, who will gather in Philadelphia from July 25 to July 28, face calls for three members of their host committee—former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Comcast Executive Vice President David Cohen, and health-insurance industry executive Daniel Hilferty—to step down.

“These three figures are multimillionaire lobbyists and high-profile supporters of political positions that most Democrats abhor,” declares an open letter by the group Reclaim Philadelphia, which describes itself as founded by “former staff and volunteers” of the Bernie Sanders campaign. “Their prominent role in hosting this year’s convention might lead one to forget that the Party pledged in its 2012 platform to ‘take immediate action to curb the influence of lobbyists and special interests on our political institutions.’”

The DNC’s host committee also has drawn fire for failing to disclose its donors in advance of the convention itself—something election laws don’t require until 60 days after the event. For unknown reasons, Democrats’ host committee also has yet to obtain official tax-exempt status as a 501(c)3 charity from the Internal Revenue Service, placing donors who want to deduct convention contributions from their taxes in a precarious spot. Organizers have said they will convert the committee to a 501(c)6 “business league” if charity status doesn’t come through.

The role of tax-exempt groups in helping underwrite conventions has always been what made the money behind these party gatherings so suspect. Under the fiction that local officials and civic leaders should be free to spend private money to promote their cities, party operatives have routinely scooped up millions for tax-exempt host committees from corporate sponsors operating outside the campaign-finance rules.

In the past, conventions have also received a federal grant—in 2012 it was about $18 million for each party convention—under the presidential public-financing system. But in 2014, Congress eliminated public convention funding, steering the money instead to pediatric medical research. That same year, Senate leaders tucked a provision into an omnibus spending bill that dramatically lifted the limits on contributions to political parties for special accounts that pay for recounts, buildings, and conventions. That means that big donors, previously banned from giving more than $33,400 a year to the Republican or Democratic National Committees, may now give an additional $100,200 apiece annually—$200,400 per election cycle—to a party’s special convention account.

The upshot is that this year’s conventions, which will cost an estimated $60 million or more apiece, will be funded entirely with private money, much of it in the form of six-figure checks from hedge fund donors, corporate executives, and other top-tier contributors. As of March 31, the two parties had collectively pulled in $10.7 million for their special convention accounts, according to the Federal Election Commission.

The larger share of the special convention account contributions has gone to Republicans, who have leveraged the parties’ new high-dollar accounts more aggressively than Democrats. Recent big contributions to the GOP convention accounts include $100,200 apiece from coal company magnate Joseph W. Craft III; Uline, Inc. CEO Richard Uihlein; and hedge fund executive Robert Mercer. Corporate GOP convention sponsors also include AT&T, Delta Airlines, and Microsoft Corp.

Big Democratic convention donors include the Comcast Corp. PAC, which gave $105,000; Eric Schoenberg, chairman of the education technology firm CampusWorks, Inc., who gave $100,000; and the Native American tribe known as the Aqua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, which gave $200,000. The DNC host committee’s website also boasts a long list of corporate sponsors, including Chevron, Comcast, Facebook, Samsung, and Sunoco.

It’s nothing new for conventions to rake in big corporate dollars, but the combination of newly relaxed rules and the mood of voters makes this year’s party fundraising festival more unseemly than ever. Donald Trump, who once boasted about his independence from special-interest donors, will arrive in Cleveland fresh off a fundraising blitz that included a Bel-Air, California dinner that charged up to $449,400 per person. It’s a once-illegal sum made possible now only by the parties’ new special high-dollar accounts to pay for buildings, recounts, and yes, conventions.

For Democrats, convention fundraising could prove even more awkward. Presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has increasingly touted her plan to rein in big money, a goal that was once a centerpiece of the Sanders campaign. It remains to be seen whether Sanders’s supporters buy it. As the Reclaim Philadelphia letter calling on Rendell, Hilferty, and Cohen to step down proclaims: “Granting lobbyists privileged access to elected officials reveals the Party leadership’s hypocrisy, disregard for its own policy positions, and disconnect from the values of the Democratic electorate.” Reported by The American Prospect 3 days ago.

How To Juggle Multiple Jobs (And How To Enjoy It!)

0
0
Whether out of necessity or out of desire, people are working more jobs than ever. Millennials are leading this trend but older generations are doing this as well. Some simply find the energy to keep working, others have to keep working after the 2008 recession left them without as much passive income as they had predicted. Whatever the reason and whatever your age, this post will help you juggle multiple jobs.

*Find Dissimilar Jobs*
Working dissimilar jobs is great because you aren't doing the same thing at every job. This means you'll have more energy. One job will use a certain skill set and another job will use another. Even if you work both jobs in the same day, you'll likely have much more energy than if you only did one job. Sometimes a mix of a physical job and a desk job is just the mix people need in order to work many hours in the day.

*Cut Your Commute*
Commutes are dangerous because they cut down on the amount of time you can work each day. After all, when you're commuting, you're making $0. That's not good at all. So make sure the jobs you're working are pretty close together. And the closer to home, the better. Because what happens with some people who work multiple jobs is they are gone from home for 12 hours per day. But they only get paid for working 9.5 hours. That's a huge difference in income.

*Use the Marketplace for Healthcare*
If you have a string of part-time jobs, that usually means you don't have employer healthcare. If that's the case, consider shopping the health insurance marketplace. There's a good chance you'll be eligible for government assistance if your income is low enough. Although if you earn too little, you won't get government assistance unless you apply and are eligible for Medicaid. So if you're working multiple jobs, you don't want to make too much or too little if you want assistance with healthcare. Although earning more money is always preferable to receiving assistance on healthcare.

*Mentally Prepare Before Starting Each Job*
Each job comes with new bosses, new coworkers, a new location, perhaps a new uniform - a new everything. That's why it's important to mentally prepare before starting each new position. Remind yourself what the certain position is like. Basically tell yourself, "Okay, it's Tuesday. That means I'll be working at Applebee's. The manager is very hands off so only speak to him if you have questions. If you need help from the kitchen, talk with Mark or Sam. Remember to wear your comfortable shoes."

*Conclusion*
There was a time in my life where I worked four jobs - sometimes all in the same day. It's not easy working multiple jobs but having multiple streams of income is always enjoyable.

Some people really excel when working multiple jobs. If this is you - excellent. If this isn't you, consider getting a full-time job that fits your personality better. And remember that you won't be able to do anything well unless you enjoy it. So always have fun!

Mendoza lost her job because she refused to give in and violate her commitment to God. Losing her source of income has had a terrible strain on Mendoza; she lost her health insurance and her struggle to find the dollars to send her grandchildren to Catholic school has become even more difficult.

Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) July 14, 2016

All across the country, American citizens are being forced to violate their consciences when it comes to abortion. Recently, Sandra Mendoza, an Illinois pediatric nurse, lost her job because of her commitment to protecting life. Last year, the Public Health Administrator for the Winnebago County Health Department mandated that Mendoza would have to violate her beliefs by assisting in provision of abortion referrals and abortifacient drugs. Mendoza refused, and subsequently lost her job. Losing her source of income has had a terrible strain on Mendoza; she lost her health insurance and her struggle to find the dollars to send her grandchildren to Catholic school has become even more difficult.

Through WonderWe, a groundbreaking crowdfunding site built on the foundation of welcoming traditional value causes, Mendoza has found her support. WonderWe works to provide a vehicle for campaigns that support individuals like Mendoza who are struggling financially because of their steadfast belief in the sanctity of life. Her refusal to give in and violate her commitment to God is inspiring, and WonderWe is honored to provide a crowdfunding platform to raise funds for Ms. Mendoza as she works to continue to support her family.

In a world where online crowdfunding has become a prominent and important source of fundraising for a variety of causes, WonderWe LLC looks to separate itself from the norm by its unique focus on “moral fundraising”, and its special emphasis on pro-life and freedom of conscience values, as well as censor campaigns that focus on the sanctity of life.

WonderWe has all the features of these big-name sites, yet with an unmatched moral compass and company culture. By truly embracing the dignity of human life from conception to natural death, WonderWe fills a critical need in the crowdfunding industry, by offering a crowdfunding platform that perfectly aligns with their pro-life beliefs.

WonderWe provides the total package for a crowdfunding site, with a special peer-to-peer feature, a video share feature, and a zero-fee pricing model. It is a natural home for Mendoza’s campaign, acting as a refuge for her, and for others embarking on traditional value campaigns, by seeing their causes not as divisive or controversial, but as essential and important.

Snoop Dogg To Perform At DNC, Courtesy Of Big Pharma

0
0
WASHINGTON ― When celebrities, high-level party operatives and the blue blazer-and-khaki crowd of staffers and journalists join together for the highly publicized Snoop Dogg concert immediately following presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, they’ll be doing so thanks to funding from two of the biggest lobbying forces in Washington.

Through a fundraising committee called Unity Convention 2016, three super PACs are organizing the Snoop Dogg Unity event and a concert with the band Los Lobos. So far, the two biggest donors for the events are the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the lobbying arm of the drug industry, and Anthem, Inc., a major health insurer.

PhRMA and Anthem each contributed $50,000 to the committee, according to a filing with the Federal Election Commission.

Unity Convention 2016 raises money for Priorities USA Action, the super PAC backing Clinton’s presidential campaign; Senate Majority PAC, which supports Democratic Senate candidates and is closely tied to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid; and House Majority PAC, which is close to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and is tasked with electing Democrats to the House.

Each of these super PACs contributed $10,000 to help cover the cost of their convention events.

PhRMA and Anthem are major lobbying forces in Washington with significant policy interests that will arise in the next administration and Congress. PhRMA and Blue Cross Blue Shield, of which Anthem is a member, are perennially two of the top 10 lobbying groups that spend the most, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Super PACs and dark money nonprofits are closely connected to donors with important lobbying interests, The Huffington Post has previously reported.

PhRMA was the key player in the Washington influence industry to help the Obama administration push the Affordable Care Act through Congress. The lobbying group made a behind-the-scenes agreement to support the legislation as long at it did not include long-standing Democratic Party policies allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices for seniors or allow cheaper drugs to be imported from Canada and other countries.

A draft of the 2016 Democratic Party platform, however, calls for Medicare to negotiate drug prices and allows for such drug importation. In addition, the platform calls for capping the price of prescription drugs, including how much Americans pay out-of-pocket for drugs, as well as expanding community health centers that can obtain cheaper drugs and increasing how quickly generics reach the market.

The draft platform also includes a call for a public health insurance option to be created and offered to people using the Affordable Care Act exchanges. Clinton and President Barack Obama have both recently called for the public option to be adopted.

But the public option was a controversial sticking point when Congress debated the legislation. Health insurers ― including Anthem, which was known at the time as WellPoint ― were adamantly opposed to the public option and also fought against the larger bill. In fact, health insurers played along with the Obama administration publicly to influence the legislation while working covertly with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to defeat it. The public option was ultimately left out of the legislation after then-Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut ― a state that a number of major insurers, including Anthem, call home ― refused to back the bill if it was included.

That same draft platform, however, does not include a call for a single-payer health care system. Delegates affiliated with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) pushed for a platform committee vote to adopt a government-run health insurance program, essentially Medicare for everyone, but were defeated by delegates connected to Clinton. Nothing scares health insurers more than efforts to replace them with government-provided insurance, as that would essentially put them out of business.

Insurers, including Anthem, are currently funding the opposition to a Colorado ballot initiative to create a single-payer system for the state. Insurers have pumped $1 million into a ballot committee called Colorado for Coloradans to oppose Amendment 69, The Intercept reported. Anthem is the largest donor to the opposition, with a $500,000 donation. The Anthem-backed opposition employs a litany of Democratic Party consultants, including one employed by Priorities USA Action.

Even more pressing for Anthem, though, is its pending merger with rival insurer Cigna, which comes at a time of increasing consolidation and monopolization across all industries.

Democratic senators, including Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, have called for the Department of Justice to block the Anthem-Cigna deal, as well as a merger between Aetna and Humana. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), an increasingly influential politician who joined the push for the DOJ to reject the Anthem-Cigna merger, recently called for a new era of antitrust enforcement to prevent the consolidation of economic and political power.

And for the first time since the 1980s, the Democratic Party’s platform includes a call to “enhance the antitrust enforcement arms of the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, and encourage other agencies to police anticompetitive practices in their areas of jurisdiction.”

The Snoop Dogg concert is just one event planned for the week of the Democratic convention. Because a super Pac is funding it, its donors are required to be revealed to the public. There will be dozens more parties and events to fete lawmakers and other officials around Philadelphia that will be funded by undisclosed corporate interests.
