Health care: We are nowhere near a single-payer system

I greatly respect Paul Krugman. However, when it comes to health care, his understanding of a single-payer system is deeply flawed [“Learning from Obama,” Opinion, April 4]. Year Of The Outsider: Why Bernie Sanders' Democratic Rebellion Is So Significant

Year Of The Outsider: Why Bernie Sanders' Democratic Rebellion Is So Significant Authored by Thomas Palley,

*2016 was supposed to have been the year of Jeb Bush versus Hillary Clinton*: the year when the established Bush dynasty confronted the upstart rival Clinton Dynasty.* But the year of the insider has turned into the year of the outsider. *On both sides, voters have unexpectedly given vent to thirty years of accumulated anger with neoliberalism which has downsized their incomes and hopes.

Though the Republican rebellion has been more clear-cut in its dismissal of insider candidates, *it is Bernie Sanders’ Democratic rebellion that is of potentially far greater historic significance.*

**The Republican rebellion is of much less significance**

The Republican uprising has undoubtedly exhibited greater anger. If Donald Trump or Ted Cruz triumph in the November general election, they threaten an uglier more intolerant politics that could even become tinged with American black-shirtism.

*However, absent the darkest of outcomes, the Republican rebellion is of less lasting political significance for two reasons.*

First, it does not fundamentally challenge the neoliberal economic model that is the root cause of popular anger on all sides. Nationalism, racism, evangelism, and cultural atavism scratch the scapegoat itch, but they do not challenge Corporate America’s and Wall Street’s domination which sustains neoliberalism.

Second, and more importantly, the Republican rebellion does not change the party’s pre-existing political trajectory and relies on electoral forces that are peaking out.

*That contrasts with Sanders’ Democratic rebellion which explicitly challenges the neoliberal economic model,* and is also about defining the political character of the coming Democratic electoral majority.

Viewed in this light, the Republican rebellion is an eruption from an angry electoral base whose political power is waning, whereas the Democratic rebellion is an eruption from a rising base whose political agenda awaits definition.

**Trump and Cruz are a logical extension of Republican politics**

The Republican elite has been profoundly taken aback by the dismissal of Crown Prince Jeb Bush and the Boy Scout Senator Marco Rubio, but both Trump and Cruz represent a logical extension of Republican politics rather than a break.

Long ago, Richard Nixon unleashed the politics of hate with his “southern strategy”, aimed at exploiting animosity toward President Johnson’s civil rights legislation to convert the South (i.e. the Confederacy) from Democrat to Republican.

Trump and Cruz have discarded the dog whistle and explicitly articulated a level of racism and xenophobia the establishment is strategically uncomfortable with. Other than that, they have towed the line on tax cuts for the rich, and Cruz was orthodox on trade until Trump started making hay with the issue.

Despite Cruz’s odious personality, the Republican establishment prefers him as he has been more orthodox on trade and Social Security, while Trump is also loathed for humiliating Jeb Bush with his taunt of “low energy”.

That said, *if Trump wins the nomination, a rapprochement is likely.* For the Republican establishment, tax cuts and preserving neoliberal globalization are preeminent, and Trump is an opportunistic businessman who trumpets deal-making.

**Trump and Cruz accelerate Republicans’ demographic destiny**

The rise of Trump and Cruz has merely accelerated Republicans’ date with demographic destiny. The party of dog whistle racism and immigrant bashing always faced a difficult future because of demographic trends making minorities an increasing share of the electorate.

Republicans hoped to postpone that difficult future by a combination of voter suppression policies (e.g. making voter registration difficult; reducing polling booth access; and excluding minority voters via “new Jim Crow” laws denying voting rights to convicted felons) and gerrymandering congressional districts in states like Texas, Wisconsin and Michigan. That has already given Republicans control of the House of Representatives despite receiving far fewer total votes.

The undemocratic construction of the US constitution, which gives two Senate seats to both small states like Wyoming (population 580k) and large states like California (population 38.5 million), also means Republicans have remained competitive in the Senate. That is because of their relative strength in the comparatively under-populated interior states.

These features could delay electoral developments, but the prognosis was always an outlook in which Republicans were going to be increasingly uncompetitive nationally. Trump’s and Cruz’s hate politics has simply accelerated and cemented that prognosis.

**Wall Street will need a new senior political partner: Democrats for sale?**

That electoral prospect implies Republicans can no longer reliably deliver for Corporate America and Wall Street, which means Corporate America and Wall Street need to find another sure political partner. Therein lies the greater significance of the Sanders - Clinton contest.

*Over the last thirty years, Wall Street has had little difficulty working with and funding Democrats, and the Clintons have been especially cooperative. *For many years, Goldman Sachs has been happy to split its political contributions, sending 55% to the Republicans and 45% to the Democrats. Now, Goldman can make a small recalibration and send a little bit more to the Democrats.

*If Hillary Clinton wins, *the Democratic Party will remain squarely within the orbit of Wall Street and Corporate America. The Democrats will become the ruling party, but their rule will substantially continue what we have had, perhaps supplemented by an extra spoonful of compassionate economic policy.

*If Sanders wins,* there is a chance the Democratic Party can rediscover its modern roots of New Deal social democracy via expanded Social Security, single payer health insurance, debt-free college, the end of neoliberal trade policies, and reining in of corporate power.

**The Democrats: party of identity politics or party of New Deal social democracy?**

These features mean it is the choices of Democrats that will set the political course for the next generation. Demographics imply Democrats will be the majority of the future, but the party’s political identity and agenda is up for grabs.

*If the Clinton vision prevails,* the Democratic Party stands to become a party of neoliberal economics, headlined by identity politics. A Clinton-led Democratic Party will also continue President Obama’s tactical appeals to “bi-partisanship”. The goal would be to enlist moderate upper-middle class Republican-leaning professionals into a corporate controlled Democratic Party franchise.

*If the Sanders vision prevails,* the Democrats will pivot toward their New Deal social democratic roots. In that case, economic solidarity and inclusion become the headline. And the party again aspires to be a mass movement rather than an awkward stitching together of corporate money, social liberals, and minority voters.

**The curse of money**

However, as long as unlimited money is allowed in politics, there is a perennial danger of a backdoor Wall Street takeover. That is* because a New Deal Democratic Party would still need money to compete in elections, leaving an opening for Corporate America and Wall Street to take back control.*

*That is why limits on money contributions and repealing the Citizens United decision are so important*. It also explains why Sanders has made that the central focus of his political revolution, while Clinton has persistently sought to diminish the issue. Reported by Zero Hedge 1 day ago.

Josh Terraneau - State Farm Insurance Agent Offers Hope to Insurees through ‘Loss of Use’

Josh Terraneau - State farm Insurance agent, in light of a PropertyCasualty360.com article about how wildfires can damage homes without actually burning them, discusses “Loss of Use” coverage.

Riverside, CA (PRWEB) April 06, 2016

Due to a spate of wildfires in 2015, many California residents faced being dropped from fire coverage, forcing residents of high-risk areas to shop for more expensive insurance as wildfires became more destructive because of the drought. However, according to a March 8, 2016, PropertyCasualty360.com article, wildfires themselves are not the only cause of damage, and the aftermath can be just as destructive, with landslides and flash floods occurring where fire has burnt away trees and plants that prevent erosion.

This is especially problematic for people in high-risk areas or areas already damaged by fire, as the law allows insurance companies to not renew policies. However, State Farm still covers people in high-risk wildfire areas and offers “Loss of Use” coverage, which kicks in once one’s house is uninhabitable, and covers any living expenses in order for the insured to maintain a normal standard of living.

“In Riverside County, where I operate, many areas have been deemed ‘high or very high wildfire risk,’ especially those areas near the San Bernardino National Forest,” said Josh Terraneau, of State Farm. “However, because banks that hold mortgages require homeowners to carry fire insurance, the people I most see who don’t carry insurance are renters, which is highly inadvisable.”

Sanders's Shaky interview Highlights Clinton's Strengths

$
0
0
Is Bernie Sanders having his Trump moment? While the Sanders campaign should have been celebrating his victory in the Wisconsin primary, it was suffering from a barrage of negative media coverage of his disappointing interview with the New York Daily News editorial board. (Remember Trump's foreign policy interview with the New York Times last month?)

If you haven't read any of the Sanders interview, I suggest you do. Opinions vary, but for the most part, major newspapers, magazines and political sites have criticized his lack of knowledge on the centerpiece of his campaign: taking Wall Street to task and breaking up the banks. He was also taken to task for his unsettling answers on Israel, ISIS, and Sandy Hook and guns. Overall, he sounded out of his depth.

Sanders has injected a lot of important ideas into the campaign. I agree with him that we have a moral obligation as a country to try to rebalance our economic scales. But the question for me has always been, how would he do it? What are the plans behind his big, sweeping statements? And how would he galvanize Congress to work with him? The interview didn't answer those questions - it raised more.

Sanders is finding out what it's like to be under the media microscope -- something Hillary Clinton has had to deal with since she was first lady. As political analyst Mark Halperin tweeted, "if Hillary gave answers like this to ed board, she would be crucified." Amen.

I'm always amazed at how much hate gets hurled her way. The insults and accusations have been shot from the Right for the whole of her career, and now they're coming from Sanders fans. But if you do your research -- or just read this article -- you'll be reminded why she is the most capable and accomplished candidate in the ring, and why she has the relationships and gravitas to be president of the United States.

So without further ado, a little love for candidate Clinton.

• *Champion of women*: Throughout her career and especially as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has worked with women here and around the globe to improve their plight. She has met with world leaders and the disenfranchised and voiceless to better understand the struggles women face, give voice to those struggles, and fight for justice. Just listen to Meryl Streep introduce Secretary Clinton at a Women's World Summit in 2012. She explains how deeply Clinton has touched women throughout the world, and how effectively she has changed the conversation around women's rights.

• *Foreign Policy expert*: With everything that's going on in the world, we need a president who knows what she's doing, and knows everybody. Focus all you want on her email server, but you're missing the much bigger picture. "Nearly every foreign policy victory of President Obama's second term has Secretary Clinton's fingerprints on it," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid told Politico. Those victories include killing Osama bin Laden, the new START Treaty with Russia, normalizing relations with Cuba, and restoring our leadership, alliances and reputation overseas after the Bush administration did so much damage - a long, painstaking and multi-pronged effort.

• *Deal Maker*: Clinton had a leading role in the daunting effort to get China, Russia and Europe to agree to crippling sanctions against Iran. "Hillary Clinton was the principal author of the sanctions on Iran that brought them to the table," says Howard Dean, former Democratic Party Chairman and Vermont governor. That statement has been echoed by many other Democrats. She also personally negotiated a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

• *Coalition Builder*: It's one thing to have voters behind you, but you need Congressional allies to get legislation passed. Hillary Clinton has infinitely more support from senators, representatives, governors and state legislators than Bernie Sanders. Even Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy has endorsed Clinton rather than his fellow Senator Sanders. Call it business as usual, but the reality is the president needs allies in Congress to get anything done. Period.

• *Unflappable HRC*: If you haven't watched any of the hearings before the Congressional Select Committee on Benghazi, do it now. They grilled her for eleven hours. It was a witch-hunt meant to discredit her campaign. But she stood up to the GOP bullies led by Congressman Trey Gowdy. As much as they tried, they couldn't rattle her - she never cracked under pressure. Isn't that a quality we want in the leader of the free world?

• *Advocate for children*: From her days with the Children's Defense Fund, to her work in the White House, to her tenures as New York Senator and Secretary of State, Clinton has always championed the causes of children. She was a critical player in the Adoption and Safe Families Act. And though some foes have tried to discredit Clinton's claims that she was instrumental in securing health insurance for millions of kids, Factcheck.org says she absolutely deserves the credit for SCHIP, or CHIP.

• *Team Player*: "Clinton has been raising money for other races; Sanders hasn't, and is still being evasive on whether he will ever do so," Says NY Times columnist Paul Krugman. There's not going to be a Sanders revolution if Congress remains in the hands of the GOP. Yes, Clinton is trying to get herself elected, but she is also working to help the broader party.

• *Glass Ceiling Buster*: And last but certainly not least, let us not forget that Hillary Clinton would be the country's first woman president. Sanders fans say that shouldn't be important, and they refuse to choose a candidate based on gender. I respect their choice and reasoning, and of course they shouldn't vote for Clinton solely because she's a woman. But when will we ever have a more qualified, intelligent, liberal woman running for the White House? If you've always wanted to see a woman in the Oval Office - Clinton is definitely the ticket.

I'd Rather Have Student Loan Aid Than a 401(k)

$

This article was written by Adam Cecil of PolicyGenius.

Health insurance. Dental insurance. A retirement plan. Snacks. At least one pot of coffee. These are the kind of perks you'd expect from a job after graduating from college, so much so that some companies are going out of their way to offer crazier and crazier perks (Evernote offering house cleaning services comes to mind). But the next big employee perk doesn't have anything to do with a five-star chef in your cafeteria (sorry Google) or Facebook's laundry service. Instead, it's as simple as helping graduates pay off their student loans.

While 80% of young workers say they want to work at a company that offers some form of student loan aid as a benefit, only 3% of companies actually offer it. And of those three percent, each company does it a little differently. Natixis Global Access Management, for example, will give you $5,000 for your student loans after working there for five years, with an additional $1,000 for five years thereafter. PricewaterhouseCoopers, on the other hand, is going to start offering $100 per month for up to six years, for a total benefit of $7,200 (because of reduced interest, they estimate the true value to be around $10,000).

In reality, the true value isn't really about the money you're getting from your employer or reducing your monthly payment. Instead, it's about reducing the amount of time you're going to spend paying this student loan. Take Amanda Danner, an analyst for Fidelity recently interviewed by the New York Times. Once Fidelity starts offering their own student loan aid program -- $2,000 annually -- it will cut down her student loan repayment period from twelve years to eight.

Massive amounts of student loans combined with the 2008 recession have convinced many millennials to postpone traditional financial milestones, such as buying a house, getting married, and having children. For Danner, it was hard to even imagine buying a home or having kids when faced with her overwhelming loan payment -- she graduated with $85,000 in loans, twice the national average. She's not the only one. According to a 2015 Bankrate survey, 56% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 have put off a major life event because of their student loan debt.

" I'd much rather have a company that offers both a retirement plan and student loan aid. But if I had to choose one, I'd have to choose student loan aid."

Student loan debt is so paralyzing that 49% of young workers would prefer to work at company that offers a student loan aid program than a company that offers a 401(k) retirement plan. I'm in the same boat for a pretty simple reason: the psychological benefit of reducing the burden of student loan payments, which, for most people, last ten years or more, is much more gratifying than receiving a match on retirement savings.

Don't get me wrong: retirement savings are important, too. Millennials already understand that. On average, we've started saving for retirement earlier than any other generation. But at the same time, our definition of retirement is changing. We plan to retire later than the traditional "age 65" rule, which gives us more time to save, and we plan to work during our retirement, at least part-time. In general, we can afford to focus on the short-term gain of lowering our monthly student payment and shortening the repayment period in lieu of long-term savings. (Plus, it's not like the student loan aid wouldn't help us save for retirement, too -- millennials don't spend all their money on just Uber and artisanal cheese, after all.)

Obviously, I'd much rather have a company that offers both a retirement plan and student loan aid. But if I had to choose one, I'd have to choose student loan aid. The fact that 49% of my peers agree with me shows how big of an opportunity there is for the 97% of employers who don't currently offer student loan aid to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

The biggest hurdle for both employers looking to offer student loan aid and employees wishing to take advantage of it is that there are no federal tax benefits to these programs, which means that both employees and employers owe taxes on these contributions. One bill introduced to Congress, the Student Loan Repayment Assistance Act of 2015, would make employer contributions to student loan payments tax-free. Unfortunately, it hasn't moved very far along the process, and GovTrack.us gives it a 1% chance of being enacted.

Bigger companies looking to stay competitive in the job market -- like their compatriots Fidelity and PricewaterhouseCoopers -- will likely begin to offer student loan aid regardless of the tax consequences. But making contributions tax-free is a key part of helping smaller companies offer this employee benefit. If you want to push your employer to offer a student loan aid benefit, 1) anonymously email this article to your HR rep and 2) call your congressperson and tell them to advocate for this bill.

In the meantime, if you're having trouble paying your student loans or are just looking to control your payments in a different way, you have options. If you have federal student loans, you should look into the government's repayment plans, some of which are flexible to fit your specific income. If you have private student loans, look into a student loan refinancing company such as Earnest to lower your interest rate.**PolicyGenius is rethinking insurance from the consumer's perspective - because it's about time somebody did. We Know What Americans Are Against. What Are We FOR?

$

It's crystal clear what Americans are AGAINST. Do we know, much less do we agree on, what we are FOR?

*Washington*
With a job approval rating hovering around 13 percent, more than three quarters of Americans are unfavorably disposed toward--are against--Congress. We don't like what they do and like even less what they don't do. Americans are particularly distressed by the difference between what our politicians promise and what they deliver. A perfect example is, "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor." Mr. Bush's (#43) "Mission Accomplished" is another nice demonstration.

*Politicians*
We know we don't like politicians like Hillary Clinton who repeatedly lie to us and keep getting away with it. Speaking of getting away with it, we don't like banks who make risky loans and when they go bad, the bankers and investment brokers get bailed out by you and me, the taxpayers.

We deeply resent an American president who apologizes--Cairo speech in June 2009--for American foreign policy and who implies that international unrest, civil discord, war, and genocide can all be laid at our doorstep.

Americans are against politicians who serve themselves first (at our expense), serve their political party second (at the country's expense), and We the People not at all. Sadly, that refers to most of the Beltway.

Hence the popularity of two presidential candidates: Trump and Sanders. The first is a foul-mouthed, anti-politician who knows nothing but has a gut-answer for everything. The second man espouses a socio-economic system, Socialism, proven to be a failure by history. Supporters of Trump or Sanders are not for Trump or Sanders. They are against the status quo, against everything we have now. Trump and Sanders are simply channels for our frustration and ire at the Washington establishment.

*Immigration Policy*
Americans are against illegal immigration. Are Americans for "securing our borders" as the federal government is instructed to do by the U.S. Constitution?

*Freedom v. Entitlement*
Are we for individual liberty and personal responsibility, or are we for government control of individuals, entitlement, and "Father Knows Best"? Are we for a social contract with the less fortunate or not? If we are, what are the terms of the contract?

Are we for risk-and-reward? When someone takes a big risk, should the winner get a big reward? When the risk-taker loses, should he take a big loss? If we are for the truth called cause-and-effect, how can we be for bank bailouts?

Are we for free and open discourse, or are we for political correctness, where the political speech police muzzle people with unorthodox views or who dare question what some call "settled science," viz., climate change? Are we for people like Trump who simply out-shout people who oppose his views?

*Foreign Policy*
Globally, we are certainly against terrorism and genocide. Are we for doing what is necessary to combat them? We know we have enemies in the world. Are we for, meaning do we stand beside (not behind) our allies? Do they know it? Do they believe us?

*"E" Will Win*
Over the last many elections cycles, the majority of Americans have really cast their presidential and Congressional votes against one person rather than for the one whose name we marked on our ballot. Today's crop of presidential hopefuls, both Democrat and Republican, present a perfect example of what we don't want. If there were "E = None of the Above" on the ballot in November 2016, I predict "E" would win in a landslide. I know for sure that "E" would get my vote.

Like many of you, we were initially excited by the calculator Vox posted here, which claims to show how each candidate's tax plan affects you.

The Vox calculator is not necessarily wrong in terms of taxes, but it's misleading.

Voters deserve better, so we built an alternative. Go try it for yourself at The Nation.

While understanding your tax burden is important, it doesn't tell you much about your overall economic well-being. Our calculator estimates numbers that matter much more - your after-tax take-home pay. With some candidates proposing taxes to fund programs like Sanders's Medicare-for-All, including healthcare in the equation is necessary. Spending on health insurance represents a significant amount of the total compensation employers pay. Thus, including healthcare provides a more realistic picture of your after-tax take-home pay. This is the money we get to spend on the things we care about.

Let's run through an example. Let's assume you're a family of four (married with two kids), with a median household income of $55,000 - right around the current median household income in the U.S.

Vox's calculator tells us that your taxes will be lower under Trump and Cruz, they'll stay the same under Clinton, and under Senator Sanders you'll pay thousands more in taxes. Relevant numbers tell a very different story.

When you run the same numbers in our calculator, and while the results are very similar for Clinton, Cruz, and Trump, there is a stark difference under Sanders - your take home pay could increase by over $5,000 under this scenario.

But how could that be you ask? See our full explanation in The Nation.

The MAP Recovery Network Welcomes The Augustine Recovery Center

Members of the MAP Recovery Network demonstrate addiction treatment success rates.

St. Augustine, FL (PRWEB) April 07, 2016

MAP Health Management, facilitator of the MAP Recovery Network, announced today that The Augustine Recovery Center has joined the Premier Outcomes-Driven Provider Network. Through its membership in the Recovery Network, The Augustine Recovery Center will differentiate itself as a high deliverable provider in the field of addiction treatment.

The MAP Recovery Network is a growing alliance of more than 70 addiction treatment providers who, in response to increased demand from health insurance payers and residents, have begun to collect post-treatment outcomes data on their discharged residents. As the field of addiction treatment transitions to utilizing telehealth services with discharged residents, the provision of recovery support services will soon become widespread among providers who are proactive and responsive to the evolving addiction treatment space.

According to Jason Chane, Owner of The Augustine Recovery Center and a leader in the evolving recovery industry, “We believe that anyone who desires and is willing to work for it, each day, can be free of addiction can be. We understand that maintaining long-term sobriety can be challenging for this reason. Membership in the MAP Recovery Network gives us the opportunity to maintain the relationship with our alumni, offer support and track their success – we are revolutionizing addiction treatment.”

MAP Recovery Network members have access to a wide array of addiction treatment resources and the MAP technology platform. In the first year following treatment, studies show that the risk of relapse is high and post-treatment recovery support has a marked impact on whether or not residents maintain sobriety. Advancements in telehealth services provide Recovery Network members with the ability to offer professional, extended recovery support to their residents who have recently completed treatment. By maintaining this vital contact following treatment, residents increase their likelihood of overcoming addiction while providers track the outcomes and measure the success of their treatment plans.

“Successful addiction treatment is being demanded by patients and payers – patients want assurance and payers want predictability”, commented Jacob Levenson, MAP Health Management CEO. “Until recently, the addiction treatment field has not been required to track and measure their success rates, which is not the case for other forms of chronic disease management. As the field evolves, we have begun to see providers embrace telehealth services in order to extend the continuum of care and demonstrate their outcomes. This will help turn the tide in the battle to fight addiction.”

Recently, MAP announced its plans to add 1,200 professional counselors to the Recovery Network, a step that will give its members additional means to provide post-treatment services. The Augustine Recovery Center will continue to differentiate itself in the addiction treatment space as a provider that is dedicated to measuring and demonstrating outcomes data and extending the continuum of care for its clientele striving to overcome addiction.

About The Augustine Recovery Center
The Augustine’s mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment to create lasting change for men struggling with addiction or substance abuse, by incorporating realistic spiritual living practices that can be carried successfully for a lifetime of recovery.
