Anthem Blue Cross hack: What you need to know about the health insurer's personal information breach Here's what you need to know about the hacker attack resulted in the theft of personal information on millions of people who have health insurance with Anthem affiliates. Hackers see rewarding targets in health care companies

Health care offers attractive growth opportunities for cyber criminals looking to steal reams of personal information, as the hacking of a database maintained by the second-largest U.S. health insurer proves. The latest breach at health insurer Anthem Inc. follows a year in which more than 10 million people were affected by health care data breaches — including hacking or accidents that exposed personal information, such as lost laptops — according to a government database that tracks incidents affecting at least 500 people. The Blue Cross Blue Shield insurer said the hackers gained access to names, birthdates, email address, employment details, Social Security numbers, incomes and street addresses of people who are currently covered or have had coverage in the past. Criminals who obtain stolen Social Security or health insurance account numbers have shown more sophistication than the average credit-card fraudster, according to Pam Dixon, executive director of the World Privacy Forum, a consumer advocacy group. Rather than use the information right away, she said some crooks will sit on Social Security or health insurance files for a year or more before using them to create new identities and apply for benefits. Health records also command a much higher price than credit card accounts on the online black markets where hackers buy and sell stolen information, said Al Pascual, director of fraud and security at Javelin Strategy & Research, a financial industry research firm. NASCAR, Obama, religious freedom: This year's DC prayer breakfast

Washington D.C., Feb 5, 2015 / 05:16 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast brought together representatives of varied faith backgrounds in the nation’s capital to pray and hear testimonies on the importance of faith.

The event included a NASCAR driver’s harrowing story of conversion after a near-death experience, as well as remarks by U.S. President Barack Obama on ISIS and religious freedom, and a greeting sent from the Pope.

Former NASCAR driver Darrell Waltrip served as keynote speaker at the event, sharing his personal story of downfall and redemption through faith.

“The hardest thing to do is to look back and see how you were. My personal life was a mess,” Waltrip said of his youth, noting that he was universally despised among racing fans and drivers for his arrogance and that he was a heavy drinker with no close friends.

After an almost-fatal crash caused him to ponder life after death, he converted to Christianity and said his life has not been the same since.

“[God] was there all the time. I just didn’t know it or acknowledge it,” he said of his pre-conversation life. “You don’t have to walk alone. You don’t have to carry all those burdens, like it’s you against the world…get off your high horse, get on your knees, and ask forgiveness.”

Waltrip is a NASCAR hall-of-famer and is tied for fourth all-time in wins. On Feb. 5, he addressed the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., an annual gathering of political and religious leaders since 1953.

Pope Francis sent a personal message to the gathering, which was attended by the Papal Nuncio to the United States, as well as the Dalai Lama, Ebola survivor and medical missionary Dr. Kent Brantly, and other guests.

“I send prayerful good wishes for you, for the fruitfulness of your work,” Pope Francis stated. “I ask you to pray for me, and to join me in praying for our brothers and sisters throughout the world who experience persecution and death for their faith.”

In his keynote address, Waltrip described his pre-conversion life: he was so despised that racing fans would boo him during introductions, and famous driver Richard Petty once voiced surprise that he could keep a sponsor, given his unpopularity.

Waltrip’s life changed when he was involved in a near-fatal crash. “It knocked me conscious,” he admitted.

“I thought I was a pretty good guy. But folks, let me tell you something. Good guys go to hell. If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, if you don’t have a relationship, if He’s not the master of your life, if you’ve never gotten on your knees and asked Him to forgive you of your sins, you’re just a pretty good guy or a pretty good gal.”

Waltrip started attending church services regularly and meeting with a pastor, Dr. Cortez Cooper. One day, Waltrip asked God to come into his life and forgive his sins.

“That was the greatest day of my life,” he reflected. “When the Lord comes into your life, you’re going to be different. You have to be different,” and he added if nothing changes, “you better try it again.”

“I still had wrecks. I still had problems,” he said afterward, but what changed was “I wasn’t in it alone. Where I’d felt like I was always in it by myself, now I had somebody to pray with, talk with, to guide me, direct me. The wisdom of the Lord.”

President Obama also spoke at the prayer breakfast. Condemning violence and acts of terror, he said faith has been used “both as an instrument of great good, but also twisted and misused in the name of evil.”

He explicitly condemned the Islamic State group as “a brutal, vicious death cult that, in the name of religion, carries out unspeakable acts of barbarism.”

“We see sectarian war in Syria, the murder of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria, religious war in the Central African Republic, a rising tide of anti-Semitism and hate crimes in Europe, so often perpetrated in the name of religion,” the president said.

Obama also praised freedom of religion as “a value we will continue to protect here at home and stand up for around the world, and is one that we guard vigilantly here in the United States.”

“Our government does not sponsor a religion, nor does it pressure anyone to practice a particular faith, or any faith at all.  And the result is a culture where people of all backgrounds and beliefs can freely and proudly worship, without fear, or coercion,” he said.

Alluding to Islamic militants’ January attack on the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which published insulting photos of Islam’s Prophet Mohammed, he said that if a society defends “the legal right of a person to insult another’s religion,” then society is “equally obligated to use our free speech to condemn such insults, “and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with religious communities, particularly religious minorities who are the targets of such attacks.”

Religious freedom has become a contentious issue in the U.S. during Obama’s presidency. More than 300 plaintiffs have filed religious freedom lawsuits against the administration over a federal mandate requiring employers to offer health insurance for contraception and related products, even if they have religious or moral objections to doing so.

Other religious liberty concerns that have been raised include and laws considering objections to “gay marriage” to be illegal discrimination, as well as state immigration laws that could prevent charitable outreach and pastoral care to undocumented immigrants, and pressure on Catholic medical personnel and others who object to abortion.

The president also noted that he is “very much looking forward to welcoming Pope Francis to the United States later this year.” The Pope is planning to visit Washington, D.C., New York and Philadelphia in September.

Obama praised the Pope’s “loving message,” saying he has been touched by Francis’ “call to relieve suffering, and to show justice and mercy and compassion to the most vulnerable.”

Time For #GreekLivesMatter

Time For #GreekLivesMatter Submitted by Yves Smith via Raul Ilargi Meijer's The Automatic Earth blog,

This is a post by Yves Smith at Naked Capitalism, who shares my worries (and quotes me) – as well as Syriza’s, of course – about what’s happening in Greece. She’s dead on in making the connection between #BlackLivesMatter and #GreekLivesMatter. What’s being done to Greece in this Chicago School style experiment is reprehensible and immoral. Europe is busy creating its own generation of gutter dwellers, first in Greece, and its own Untermenschen, yet again, just 70 years after WWII ended. Shame on them, and shame on you for letting it happen. Don’t!

If you are not part of the solution, you are [DEL: part of the problem :DEL] an accomplice.

The Troika’s willingness to turn Greece into a failed state first, as a side effect of its “rescue the French and German banks” operation, and now, as part of its German hegemony protection racket, is killing people and in the longer term will only accelerate the rise of extreme right wing elements in the Eurozone. As Ilargi wrote last week:

In what universe is it a good thing to have over half of the young people in entire countries without work, without prospects, without a future? And then when they stand up and complain, threaten them with worse? How can that possibly be the best we can do? And how much worse would you like to make it? If a flood of suicides and miscarriages, plummeting birth rates and doctors turning tricks is not bad enough yet, what would be?

If you live in Germany or Finland, and it were indeed true that maintaining your present lifestyle depends on squeezing the population of Greece into utter misery, what would your response be? F##k ‘em? You know what, even if that were so, *your nations have entered into a union with Greece (and Spain, and Portugal et al), and that means you can’t only reap the riches on your side and leave them with the bitter fruit*. That would make that union pointless, even toxic. You understand that, right?

Greece is still an utterly corrupt country. Brussels knows this, but it has kept supporting a government that supports the corrupt elite, tried to steer the Greeks away from voting SYRIZA. Why? How much does Brussels like corrupt elites, exactly? The EU, and its richer member nations, want Greece to cut even more, given the suicides, miscarriages, plummeting birth rates and doctors turning tricks. How blind is that? Again, how much worse does it have to get?

Does the EU have any moral values at all? And if not, why are you, if you live in the EU, part of it? Because you don’t have any, either? And if you do, where’s your voice? *There are people suffering and dying who are part of a union that you are part of. That makes you an accomplice.* You can’t hide from that just because your media choose to hide your reality from you.

It is time to take action, both here and in Europe. I hope you’ll send this post, and our related posts on the the ECB and Greece (see here for the overview and here on why the Fed is complicit) to people who would be sympathetic to the plight of Greeks, as well as to members of the Greek community themselves. Even if our suggestion is not a fit, it will hopefully spur them to come up with social media and public events to raise the visibility of the damage being done to Greece and other periphery countries in the name of misguided, destructive austerity policies.

Readers in the US know that the #BlackLivesMatter campaign has succeeded in bringing people of all races together to protest police brutality against African Americans. The protest shown below was held at the American Embassy in London.

This effort has sufficiently rattled the New York Police Department, one of the targeted abusers, to start targeting peaceful protestors with an “anti terrorist” unit, leading public interest groups to lodge yet more objections.

One of its most successful means of raising public awareness has been to stage “die ins”:

Grand Central has been the site of many #BlackLivesMatter protests.

*The idea would be to bring the protests to central banks themselves, to the ECB in Frankfurt, to the Eurozone central banks, and to the Board of Governors and the New York Fed. Central bankers have managed to hide from public scrutiny and accountability. It is time to put them on notice that the public realizes that their bank-supporting policies are not just destroying economies and futures of young people, but causing deaths. The British Medical Journal attributed a 35% rise in the level of suicides in Greece to austerity. *And that’s before you get to the harder-to-calculate impact of the damage austerity has done to the medical system, with many prescription medications beyond the budgets of hospitals. Extracts from a report at OpenDemocracy:

I joined healthcare workers and the Greece Solidarity Campaign to visit hospitals, clinics and food markets. I spoke to healthcare staff, volunteers, politicians and local government officials.

What I witnessed appalled me – and brought tears to my eyes.

In Greece’s biggest hospital, the Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, conditions were worse than those I have seen in developing countries.

The moment the hospital doors open on ‘emergency’ days, people flood in. The collapse in official primary and community health care services means everyone who needs healthcare comes to A+E – whether for a major accident, medication for a long term condition or to get their child immunized. Staff told me that serious trauma cases often have to wait hours for X-rays and treatment due to understaffing and that, if too many cases come in at the same time, people die before they can be treated…

Social solidarity health clinics have been set up all around Greece staffed by volunteers who try to provide basic care for those with no access to healthcare. Doctors, nurses and pharmacists volunteer in these clinics, but not nearly enough to meet the needs.

I visited the Social Solidarity Clinic in Peristeri, a district of Athens with a population of about 400,000 people. The volunteer staff, doctors and nurses who worked there told me that *most local state run health clinics had been shut. The government had closed all the polyclinics then reopened some recently but with only 30% of the doctors that they need*. Whereas previously there had been 150 doctors providing services to the district, there were now only 50. A polyclinic for a population of 400,000 people had no gynaecologists, no dermatologists, and only two cardiologists.

“We want our doctors back” – said one of the volunteers I spoke to. *Thousands of doctors have left the country. Those that remain – including senior hospital doctors – earn about €12,000 a year….*

Clinic volunteers said that people with long term conditions like diabetes or with cancer had particular problems getting the treatment they needed. Uninsured cancer patients can’t afford chemotherapy. The solidarity organisations appeal to people on chemotherapy to donate one day’s worth of medication for patients who can’t afford to the drugs themselves.

The Greek government passed a law in January allowing so that if people get into debt their property can be confiscated. Some people decline further treatment rather than accrue debt from healthcare costs that might lead to their family losing their home.

*Greek mothers are now charged €600 to have a baby and €1200 for a Caesarian or complications. It’s twice that for foreign nationals living in Greece.* The mother has to pay the fee on leaving the hospital. When the charges were first introduced, if the mother couldn’t pay, the hospital kept the baby until the payment was made. International condemnation led to that practice being discontinued and now the money is reclaimed through extra tax – but if the family can’t afford that then their home or property can be confiscated. And if she still can’t pay she can be imprisoned. An increasing number of newborn babies are abandoned in the hospital. One obstetrician I spoke to called it the “criminalization of childbirth.”

Contraception is unaffordable for many – health insurance does not even cover it. There are many more abortions – 300,000 a year –and for the first time the death rate in Greece is outstripping the birth rate. *People can’t afford to have babies. It’s hard enough to feed and care for existing children.*

Please circulate this post widely and tweet it, using #GreekLivesMatter. If you live in a city where a central bank is located, get this idea in front of organizers. They can no doubt adapt and improve upon it. And above all, send it to all the Greeks you know, even those in Greece who might send it on to friends and family in the diaspora.

If you are in the US, please contact your Congressman and express your dismay that the Fed is tacitly supporting the ECB in its reckless and destructive Eurozone policies and has the stature and the leverage to weigh in. Remember, many Republicans are as unhappy with the lack of transparency and undue concentration of power at the Fed. Even a small step supporting this effort is a step in the right direction. Giant Anthem health data breach could lead to China

Giant Anthem health data breach could lead to China New York (AFP) - Data on as many as 80 million customers at US health insurance giant Anthem was stolen by hackers, officials confirmed Thursday, in a cyberattack investigators have reportedly linked to China.

The Bloomberg News agency cited three people with knowledge of Anthem's investigation as saying that cybersleuths believed the breach bore the hallmarks of previous attacks blamed on Chinese hackers.

The cyberattack is just the latest exposing personal information on millions of people in the United States, triggering calls for companies to beef up their data defenses.

"Cyberattackers executed a very sophisticated attack to gain unauthorized access to one of Anthem's IT systems and have obtained personal information relating to consumers and Anthem employees who are currently covered, or who have received coverage in the past," a statement from the second-largest US health insurer said.

"Once the attack was discovered, Anthem immediately made every effort to close the security vulnerability, contacted the FBI and began fully cooperating with their investigation," said chief executive Joseph Swedish.

"Anthem's own associates' personal information -- including my own -- was accessed during this security breach. We join you in your concern and frustration, and I assure you that we are working around the clock to do everything we can to further secure your data."

The information includes names, birth dates, social security numbers, street addresses, email addresses and employment information, the company said.

"The affected database has records for 80 million people and tens of millions" of them were stolen, spokeswoman Cindy Wakefield said.

-China link-

Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal reported that while the investigation into the attack was nascent, there were indications it could be part of a broader spying campaign instead of profit-driven identity theft.

With details about a person's medical records, for example, cyber spies could craft emails that appear legitimate but are rigged with malicious software to gain access into networks of businesses or government agencies where they work.

Last year, US retailer Home Depot said 53 million email addresses were stolen, months after fellow retailer Target said personal data on 70 million customers was accessed.

Some experts say medical data can be even more lucrative to hackers than credit cards because they can create fake identities for prescription drugs to be resold, or file false insurance claims.

Security experts welcomed Anthem's decision to make the issue public swiftly.

"I'm pleased to see Anthem publishing information about the security breach online, and I'm sure customers will be grateful that the company has not tried to hide away the news," independent security researcher Graham Cluley said in a blog post.

"But what's really necessary is for companies and organizations to do a better job at protecting our personal information. Too many firms who are entrusted with data from the general public are finding themselves in the uncomfortable position of admitting that they have been hacked."

The United States government has long accused China of mounting an aggressive cyberwar against American companies and interests, charges routinely denied by Beijing.

FBI director James Comey last October said China was at the "top of the list" of countries launching cyberattacks on US firms.

"There are two kinds of big companies in the United States," Comey said. "There are those who've been hacked by the Chinese and those who don't know they’ve been hacked by the Chinese."

80 million social security numbers, other data possibly stolen in breach at health care insurer Anthem

Health insurance company Anthem (better known by their Blue Cross Blue Shield brand) is the victim of one of the largest breaches in history, with intimate personal data on 80 million former and current user being stolen.

"Anthem was the target of a very sophisticated external cyber attack," Anthem president and CEO Joseph Swedish said this morning. Among the data stolen were names, birthdays, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, full addresses, emails and employment info including work addresses.

The stolen database had 80 million customer's data in it, but Anthem does not believe everyone has been affected. Regardless, the company confirmed the number is certainly in the tens of millions. Anthem says no medical records were stolen in the breach.

"Anthem's own associates' personal information -- including my own -- was accessed during this security breach. We join in your concern and frustration and I assure you that we are working around the clock to do everything we can to further secure your data," Swedish added.

States Probe Massive Data Breach at Health Insurer Anthem

Filed under: Identity Theft, Company News, Health Insurance, Ripoffs & Scams, Internet FraudBy Karen Freifeld

NEW YORK -- Several U.S. states are investigating a massive cyberattack on No. 2 U.S. health insurer Anthem (ANTM) that a person familiar with the matter said is being examined for possible ties to China.

Anthem disclosed the attack late Wednesday, saying unknown hackers had penetrated a database with some 80 million records. The insurer said it suspected they had stolen information belonging to tens of millions of current and former customers as well as employees.

Attorneys general of Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Arkansas and North Carolina are looking into the breach, according to representatives of their offices and internal documents. California's Department of Insurance said it will review Anthem's response to the data attack.
We hope and expect to work in close coordination with other attorneys general.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen asked Anthem Chief Executive Officer Joseph Swedish to provide by March 4 detailed information about the cyberattack, the company's security practices and privacy policies, according to a letter obtained by Reuters on Thursday.

"We hope and expect to work in close coordination with other attorneys general," said Jaclyn Falkowski, a spokeswoman for Jepsen.

A source familiar with the probe told Reuters that a possible connection to China was being investigated, and the Wall Street Journal reported that people close to the investigation say some tools and techniques used against Anthem were similar to ones used in previous attacks linked to China.

The origin of cyberattacks is difficult to determine, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hong Lei, said Friday.

"Such careless identification of the relevant attacker clearly is unreasonable," Hong told a news briefing in Beijing.

*Ongoing Investigation*

Late Wednesday, the FBI said it was looking into the matter but didn't discuss suspects.

"As far as China being involved, I don't know," said FBI spokesman Paul Bresson. "I don't think we know yet. Our investigation is ongoing."

On Friday, Anthem officials are scheduled to brief the House Energy and Commerce Committee on the breach.

"This latest intrusion into patients' personal information underscores the increasing magnitude and evolving nature of cyber crimes," Fred Upton, the committee's chairman, said in a statement. "Every business is at risk and American consumers are anxious."

President Barack Obama's cybersecurity adviser, Michael Daniel, speaking at a seminar in Washington, called the data breach "quite concerning" and warned consumers to change their passwords and monitor their credit scores.

Connecticut has worked with other states to investigate some of the biggest U.S. data breaches reported to date, including ones at retailers Target (TGT) and Home Depot (HD). The office of Connecticut's attorney general said Anthem has agreed to two years of credit monitoring for customers there.

A representative for New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman declined to say whether he planned to work with Connecticut but noted his office had contacted Anthem to discuss protecting its customers in the wake of the data breach.

A representative with FireEye (FEYE), which was investigating the attack on behalf of Anthem, declined comment.
